Not only do I not understand how the USPS functions at all, I am also pretty sure that USPS itself does not understand how USPS functions at all.

I have a package en route. It left New Jersey and has been to South Carolina, North Carolina, Arizona, back to North Carolina, back to Arizona. We're hoping it eventually visits California.

you could try leaning into the engineering brain, and make fancy pen holders for engineers?

As we walked back to our car, dad looked at the CHP and police cars, the fire truck, the ambulance, and said "this is why civilization is good. People *COME*!"

Eventually they'll call me for a statement, for her insurance if nothing else, and I'll probably be able to learn more. She said "what happened?" several times as she woke up, seemed to me that she'd temporarily lost consciousness and so had no memory of the event or what led up to it.

Ambulance was there in under 5 minutes, as were CHP. Think she'll be ok. But what a scary thing to witness.

We hopped out, called 911, ran over to her. Airbag did a number on her face and chest, smoke from it made me think engine was going to burn but it dissipated once doors were open. Checked breathing and pulse, got her seatbelt undone, kept her upright until she regained consciousness.

Saw an accident happen today. Was out doing errands, car in front of us just...started drifting to the left, into oncoming traffic. No swerving, no braking, looked like she lost consciousness. Oncoming car swerved a bit to avoid her and kept going, she then hit a pole on the far side of the street.

I feel better about this subscription than most: TPM is telling the truth when the truth is under assault elsewhere.

A photo of a basic bike leaning against the open tailgate of a pickup.

(Getting my stuff out of the interstate shipping container)

Baby, you’re a California bike now!

Adding to this: Water quality. You've got good water, Boulder, and that's without even considering Eldo water (and you must consider Eldo water).

Figurines of Brady Bunch and Partridge Family fighting each other

I have created a diorama of the Partridge family attacking the Brady Bunch family. My life is very boring.

Words mean things, dammit.

Read more, America.

Among many, many things about this that grate on the senses is the linguistic imprecision: What does "...is a lie" mean? Pluralism is a thing in the world, it exists. How is a thing that exists "a lie?" It cannot be, what he means is "should not exist," which is a different statement.

I love Sam, Tilly, Ake so much. And Thok, who I hope we get to learn more about.

This is to say: if you're an attorney who's hesitated to take on habeas cases because you think you lack the knowledge, or you're worried about whether you'll really help, I PROMISE you can make a difference. I'm just a dipshit with a 7-year-old laptop and a bad attitude. If I can do it, so can you.

love how we killed the old, frail anti-nuke ayatollah just to have him replaced with his young, healthy son who wants nukes and who just had his father, mother, wife, and child murdered on the same day by his mortal enemy. surely this will bring peace to the region

Was once walking around Berkeley and outside a coffee shop on Durant a streetkid said to me excitedly "Jello Biafra is inside this coffee shop! He's drinking coffee!" Anyway, that's my Jello Biafra story.

There's definitely some redwood here! (and plaster walls, which absorb wifi like nobody's business) But also: rattling single-glazed leaky windows, outer doors with gaps I can see through. Cold-weather homes in CO would never!

Granted I'm in a hundred year old home, but still. You'd think that with California's energy costs homes would be smarter than they seem to be.

Weird thing about moving from Colorado to southern California: Doors and windows here aren't at all airtight, as a matter of course, as they are in Colorado even in cheaper places. Very little thought here to homes just bleeding heat outward, letting pollutants inward.

This is absolutely hilarious and deserves a Veep-style TV adaptation.

I think that if I became Canadian I would celebrate by buying a chainsaw! (Stihl or Husqvarna). Maybe post some snarky comments to Americans online about healthcare costs too, that kinda thing.

Joking aside, the things I am most looking forward to having again:
- Bike
- Cameras/lenses
- RasPis and associated radios/antennae/NAS drives
