Taking a look at my “managing supply side shocks” manual and must have missed the “conspiracy about price signals”, “ignore opportunities to encourage demand management” chapter

I imagine there is a fascinating long read to be written about the changing economics & interests of cinema goers in the streaming age (both for the big chains like Vue and for indies / community cultural centres)

Yes fair enough - don’t mean to sound like a London exceptionalist - though I think scale does help (complete the list etc)!

I think this is one of the great dividends of London life - a cursory google of a great film you want to see again on big screen will often yield results (or e.g you will be prompted by programming from PC / BFI). Took my dad to see Point Break in imax a year or so ago - an absolute joy!

TIL that Egypt is the world's largest exporter of a certain vegetable, which means that between the Suez Canal and the vegetable, Egypt controls two of the world's Artichokepoints.

Most of governing is picking losers. So idea that no-one can ever lose out is pretty fatal for good governance. www.economist.com/britain/2026...

Can this be a solution?

I think you are on to something here: once you assume universe plot slop will get butts in seats and you stop treating movie goers as consumers you simply fail to reach the massive numbers you want!

In what world are the top 6 teams in England - either management or players - only drawn from a native population?! I think there are stronger arguments that football is less controlled & has less set plays enabling tactics in same way as NFL; I don’t think that’s anything to do with population?

An oil tanker approaches the strait of Hormuz, collects a gold star and passes through while safely invulnerable

I think I may have cracked it

It would be nice if people remembered this piece of wisdom from the greatest economics tweet in history (and the one I am most insanely jealous of not having written, especially because it was a reply to me).

🚨 WATCH: Labour MP Charlotte Nichols reveals she was raped as an MP as she opposes the jury trial reforms

"I waited 1,088 days to go to court. We've been told [by the Government] that if we have concerns about this Bill, it's because we've not been raped"

The Iran war should be a lesson for Keir Starmer's Government. If you take a clear line on an issue where the public agree with you then it's your opponents who end up having to back down, not you

Yes, hello, is that God? Yeah, hi. I have a complaint. You gave me this brain that’s designed for finding berries and avoiding lions and now people are ‘just circling back’ to see if we can ‘move the needle’ on ‘key initiatives’? NONE of those things are berries.

not to be all “if this is were in London” but if this were Kings Cross- which has similar levels of traffic and history- it would absolutely be all over everyone’s news

I am also shocked by the lack of coverage of this fire. It’s so far only affecting the Union Street buildings, but one of those has partially collapsed, from what I can tell backwards into the station. And it’s not yet contained. This is major and more than halfway down BBC’s homepage.

This whole story is so horrifying at so many levels. It should be a seismic scandal but it will probably barely make a ripple.

The idea the North Sea is some great goldmine waiting to be tapped is entirely at odds with reality.

Your regular reminder that the UK is in fact a high trust society and anyone who implies it isn’t is either selling you a pup or has bought one.

4. US government designates Anthropic as a supply chain risk
Extremely low (<1%). Anthropic is a US-founded, US-headquartered company with strong ties to the US national security community and a reputation for safety-focused AI. There's no plausible near-term pathway to this.
2. US–Israel joint airstrikes on Iran to assassinate head of state
Low (~3-5%). Both countries view Iran as a major adversary, and Israel has conducted targeted assassinations of Iranian figures. But a joint operation specifically targeting the head of state would be an extraordinary escalation — essentially an act of war — with enormous geopolitical consequences. Covert Israeli operations are more plausible than overt joint strikes.

one of the fun things about AI is using it as a "just woke up from a coma" simulator

there's a nugget here which helps to explain Brown's character and why he was so incensed by the allegations against Mandelson from their time in office
