The South Korean ministers tasked with negotiating a last-ditch trade deal with US President Donald Trump said that to prepare they role-played and solicited tips for engaging with the unpredictable leader reut.rs/475oVLF 1/6

ROK’s win is that it managed to reach a deal that’s not 25% tariff while maintaining existing level of protection for its most politically controversial industries: rice and beef. But negotiations on other NTBs will ensue, and today’s deal is not favorable to its auto industry.

As expected, today’s trade deal is only one of the many trade hurdles ROK will face vis-a-vis the US under Trump. Negotiations on NTBs in agriculture screening and automobile safety to continue, according to the ROK delegation.

That’s what one of the many purposes of the soon-to-happen summit at the White House is for from Seoul’s view: to quell pro-Yoon demands for Trump’s intervention. Summit is Trump legitimating Lee, as he rightfully deserves.

Shipbuilding had emerged as a key point in negotiations, as South Korean officials pitched their nation’s advanced shipbuilding industry as key to revitalizing the declining U.S. shipbuilding industry and help it keep up with China’s. South Korea is the world’s 2nd largest shipbuilder behind China.

-South Korean Pres Lee Jae Myung said $350B fund would help S. Korean countries enter U.S. market in key areas, including shipbuilding, semiconductors, biotechnology, energy.
-Of that, $150B will go toward shipbuilding cooperation and help Korean companies enter the U.S. industry, Lee said.

I must say I'm glad Trump congratulated Lee's election because hopefully that will shut Yoon's supporters up about Trump coming to Yoon's help.

With the upcoming October APEC summit in South Korea, it’s in Lee’s interests that he has Trump’s attention and interests in attending it.

Trump reportedly asked to schedule a summit with ROK Lee as soon as next week. Probably a good strategy for Seoul to give Trump victory optics asap.

Give Trump his victory photo ops and call it a day. Maybe that’s the plan.

Prez Lee Jaemyung already justifying that the agreement was made with conditions equal to or better than other countries’ trade deals with the US.

But I guess this will help South Korea buy time as it divests of the US market while seeking alternative markets and trade opportunities.

So US takes it all because of the 2008 K O R U S F T A that did South Korea no good this time.
