Scientists warn 1,000-foot ‘mega-tsunami’ could wipe part of America off the map Alaska, Hawaii and areas along the mainland West Coast would be at risk if an earthquake erupts along the Cascadia subduction zone within the next 50 years.

Where is @the-independent.com getting this idea of a 1000ft tsunami from the paper they cite by @diatomdura.bsky.social ?? Am I missing something? ⚒️

Does anybody remember a video a few years ago where CCTV caught a thrust earthquake that uplifted a truck if I recall correctly. I retweeted it with a comment like "1 small step in orogeny" but of course, Twitter is dead, so there no way to find it #earthquake ⚒️

High-income groups disproportionately contribute to climate extremes worldwide - Nature Climate Change While climate injustice is widely recognized, a quantification of how emissions inequality translates into unequal accountability is still lacking. Here researchers examine how affluent groups disprop...

Nature paper finds that 2/3rds of warming since 1990 is attributable to the wealthiest 10%, with 1/5th caused by top 1%, and 8% of attributable to top 0.1%.

A reminder that policy must address the outsized impact of the world's wealthiest.

You and every other right-thinking person, who hasn't had their thinking skewed by right-wing fundamentalist 'Christians'. I'm glad you did it, and glad you completed it.

If you had to wait at a bus stop this morning in Christchurch with no shelter please vote in the Local body elections for candidates who will support more investment in public transport infrastructure.

Watch seismic waves from the M7.7 earthquake in Myanmar ripple across North America.

This animation, called a Ground Motion Visualization (GMV), shows how the ground moved as detected by seismometers across the continent.

You should go to Tasmania, where half the country is covered in Jurassic dolerite. The scourge of Tasmania (but sometimes quite pretty too). Also, what is the most boring???

My wife and I met him when we were members of the Natural History Museum in 2001 or 2002. He was involved in a tour of the Darwin Centre, with all these amazing specimens in jars and tanks. After that we got a signed copy of his book "Fossils, the key to the past". Lovely man!

I owe an apology to all James Bond movies. I mocked them for having completely unrealistic, cartoonish villains that simply weren't believable.

2025 has made it impossible to levy that criticism anymore.
