2 years of default urban/village 20mph in Wales has resulted in over 1,000 fewer killed or injured. The data shows a 25% reduction in casualties on the 20/30mph roads. Drivers gain with damage risk, crashes and premiums down. Well done Wales. bit.ly/4ppl030

Hopefully the start of a much bigger project to give more space to people in Richmond town centre.

See Oxford Street in a whole new light.
On Sunday 21 September, βThis is Oxford Streetβ promises to be a joyful, traffic-free celebration of the potential future of Londonβs high street. Join us to enjoy entertainment, street food and games and activities for all ages.
#pedestrianiastion never works. Allegedly. Church Street in #Twickenham, closed to motors some yrs back. Yes an event but how did all these pple get here when they canβt park?? Itβs a conundrum. Well done @richmondcouncil.bsky.social - more please. @richmondcycling.bsky.social @londonls.bsky.social

75% of primary pupils in London walk or cycle to school and giant SUVs are a growing threat to their safety.

Vision Zero plans need to include measures to reduce car use. Delivering the Safe System on its own is not enough; cities also need to reduce driving. The latest AVZ briefing highlights recent research showing that when car use falls casualties fall too.

If you plan to respond to TfL Congestion Charge proposals (consultation ends 4th Aug), do have a look at our blog. Some good things in there from TfL but could go way further to make Central London safer and have a fairer balance between people and vehicles.

Sheffield will be the UKβs biggest city to trial side-road zebra crossings β simple, low-cost changes to make streets safer. Weβre already leading Yorkshire on School Streets. This is the next step.

Great to see masterplan proposals from the Harley Street BID to make the amazing streets in that area much more pedestrian friendly. Too much traffic, hard-to-cross-streets and tricky junctions make walking there much less enjoyable than it should be.
See: harleystreetbid.com
Often overlooked is the importance of reducing traffic to help reduce road casualties. NYC Congestion Pricing is seeing "number of cars entering the pricing zone is down by 11%" and "traffic injuries down 15%". London needs more policies that reduce car use across the city.

πΊοΈ Think a low traffic West End is a crazy idea? The rest of Europe doesn't seem to think so...
Take Paris and Ghent, two cites that have started to embrace low traffic living!

Good to see proposals coming forward at roughly the same time for Oxford Street and a much more pedestrian friendly Regent St area. Really need to link these up to other schemes for a car-lite West End.

The same street in Levenshulme, Manchester, one hundred years apart.
The private motor vehicle is an invasive species, which gradually crowds out and suffocates the rich social life of our cities.
When cars donβt dominate the streets, life flourishes.
We could have eliminated child poverty over the past 100 years but instead we eliminated the one amazingly beneficial thing that all children, rich or poor, had daily access to: outdoor play and freedom.
