Fabulous news James. LB Newham has done a great job making it easier and safer to walk, wheel and cycle in recent years. Please keep up the excellent work.

Early days but great to see St Martins Lane included in @london.gov.uk Summer Streets. It will be car-free from 11am to 11pm (until 31 October); 20 businesses hv applied for licenses for outside dining. Hopefully the start of it becoming more fully pedestrianised.

2 years of default urban/village 20mph in Wales has resulted in over 1,000 fewer killed or injured. The data shows a 25% reduction in casualties on the 20/30mph roads. Drivers gain with damage risk, crashes and premiums down. Well done Wales. bit.ly/4ppl030

Good to visit Hammersmith Bridge and see people enjoying walking across the bridge. Well designed with lots of separate space for people walking and wheeling and people cycling. So much quieter and calmer on Castlenau on the Barnes side of the bridge.

Car-free day closure of George St in Richmond by LB Richmond-on-Thames brought out large numbers of people to enjoy the town centre and support the shops and local businesses. Hopefully the start of a much bigger project to give more space to people in Richmond town centre.

London council weighs parking surcharge on 'supersize' SUVs Lambeth to commission study into whether larger vehicles pose a greater danger to pedestrians and cyclists

Brilliant to be part of this coalition of Lambeth children asking the council to take action to reduce the number of SUVs on our streets.

75% of primary pupils in London walk or cycle to school and giant SUVs are a growing threat to their safety.

Vision Zero plans need to include measures to reduce car use. Delivering the Safe System on its own is not enough; cities also need to reduce driving. The latest AVZ briefing highlights recent research showing that when car use falls casualties fall too.

Interesting/informative interview with @willnorman.co.uk in @ZagDaily about Vision Zero in London. Runs through the successes...20mph limits and the challenges...more larger heavier vehicles/SUvs. Good on lessons/ideas from other global cities.

If you plan to respond to TfL Congestion Charge proposals (consultation ends 4th Aug), do have a look at our blog. Some good things in there from TfL but could go way further to make Central London safer and have a fairer balance between people and vehicles.

Sheffield set to become UK's biggest city to trial new zebra crossings, hoping to boost active travel and cut road deaths The new crossings are a hundred times cheaper than traditional zebras, but are not currently recommended by the Department for Transport.

Sheffield will be the UK’s biggest city to trial side-road zebra crossings β€” simple, low-cost changes to make streets safer. We’re already leading Yorkshire on School Streets. This is the next step.

Great to see masterplan proposals from the Harley Street BID to make the amazing streets in that area much more pedestrian friendly. Too much traffic, hard-to-cross-streets and tricky junctions make walking there much less enjoyable than it should be.

Six months into congestion pricing, more cars are off the road, data shows More than 10 million fewer vehicles have entered the zone.

Often overlooked is the importance of reducing traffic to help reduce road casualties. NYC Congestion Pricing is seeing "number of cars entering the pricing zone is down by 11%" and "traffic injuries down 15%". London needs more policies that reduce car use across the city.

More pedestrianisation plans for London's West End Regent Street St James's would be pedestrianised under the plans from The Crown Estate and council.

Good to see proposals coming forward at roughly the same time for Oxford Street and a much more pedestrian friendly Regent St area. Really need to link these up to other schemes for a car-lite West End.

Determining Safe Speeds | RoadSafetyFoundation.org The Road Safety Foundation has published a new report entitled β€˜Determining Safe Speeds’, working with experts in in-depth collision investigation research from Loughborough University, TRL, Autoliv and LΓΆsningar. The report identifies the speeds that would be required to prevent most deaths and serious injuries. These speeds are evidence-based, given the laws of physics and the fragility of the human body. The report does not make recommendations about speed limit setting; it simply reports this evidence base from in-depth collision investigation studies.

The private motor vehicle is an invasive species, which gradually crowds out and suffocates the rich social life of our cities.

When cars don’t dominate the streets, life flourishes.
