De-Nazification was the same. The British quickly realised a lot of people were identifying Nazis merely to settle scores or based on pre-existing grudges, as well as save themselves or profit from the occupation

In a competitive field, ski mountaineering must be one of the most lunatic sports at the Winter Olympics. The uphill zig zags through an approximation of an Elizabethan country house's formal garden. The flight of stairs mid piste. Ripping the grip tape off but having to pocket it. It's outstanding

Undoubtedly true. That also includes paying for the infrastructure to house an increased Army - I don't think people realise how much of the UK's Army was based in overseas garrisons, particularly Germany. The offer is also significantly worse now than it was

IWM has acquired a collection relating to Dame Vera Lynn, inc. uniform, more than 600 fan letters she received, and her diary of her 1944 tour of India and Burma. Congratulations to all my colleagues who've worked so hard to both acquire and celebrate and share this

I like how, in the RWF image, the eye is drawn to the line of blokes keeping low, and then you pick out the one who's already moving forward but hidden in the grass

Have come across two stonking photos from the Burma campaign this morn. Left: IWM SE 142, men of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers use paddy fields for cover as they approach Japanese positions. On the right: IWM SE 778, a Bren gunner guards a jungle path after artillery has cleared an area near Pinwe #SWW

Yet in the newest movies, somehow the upgraded B-wings were instead made more like B-17s acting out Memphis Belle. Just one of many reasons why they were terrible

I don't disagree. There are certain pots of money and philanthropic funds that are designed to specifically help with projects such as this, and that can't be used for anything else. So it isn't a binary choice, or one museum succeeding at the expense of another

Longer term I think Crimea remains the major issue, more than Donbass. It holds symbolic value for both sides, but despite being clear that there can be no territory loss Ukraine lacks the capability to take it back militarily. Will accepting Crimea's loss become the real barometer of peace in Kyiv?

Sobering reading. And it doesn't take account the issue of quality of forces. But it finally appears the idea of mass having a value of its own is catching on. Yes in 1991 a division was deployed on GRANBY but it took a further 2 from 1 BR Corps to put it into the field
