The set comes with a special booklet offering introductions and newly commissioned essays, and the individual wallets offer up the original album artwork, with track listings and newly compiled indexes of the entire series (along with some wonderful photographs!).

The first—released this April—explores the earlier recordings of the series, from 1991 to 2007, and covers 130 works, 14 orchestras, 21 conductors, 19 pianists and 59 different composers, alongside a handful of bonus concerto recordings from the same period.

The ambition—to unearth, record and present the great romantic piano concertos of yesteryear—was vast, almost gothic in scale. Now, a chance to collect the whole series across two 50CD boxed sets.

Cellist Steven Isserlis has given us a winning new recording, “1851” on @hyperionrecords.bsky.social. He and his esteemed duo partner Connie Shih (on a vintage Erard) play sonatas composed in that year by Moscheles and Schumann (violin sonata No. 2 transcribed by Isserlis) and other short pieces.

This new account features Martyn Brabbins—a noted exponent of Elgar, as of so much else—conducting the forces of the Huddersfield Choral Society and Orchestra of Opera North, and marks another highlight in this choir's long and fruitful association with the work.

Despite the inadequacies of its 1900 premiere, the stature of Elgar's 'The Dream of Gerontius' was never seriously doubted, not least by its composer who fully recognized the work's claims on posterity.

Knüpfer's obituarist (alas, the composer died aged just forty-three) approvingly noted 'such sweetness and skilfulness that he delighted even the saddest hearts' in the music, a tribute with which it's difficult to take issue on the evidence of this album.

It opens with a fine Christmas cantata in which the choir of angels (three sopranos, their haloes provided by three violins) bring good tidings to Luke's shepherds (three lower vocal and corresponding instrumental parts), before both choirs unite in a final hymn of praise.

Sebastian Knüpfer (1633-1676) became Thomaskantor in June 1657 (at the age of twenty-four) and Robert King and The King's Consort's Hyperion collection of Knüpfer's sacred music is a splendid introduction to his work.
