I used the NFL Hall of Fame election process to explain how rules shape outcomes — and how “voting” systems can quietly protect institutions instead of people.
Not really about football. Very much about democracy.

The NFL Hall of Fame voting process is weirdly instructive if you care about elections.
Approval voting + hard caps = incentives voters probably don’t intend.
Writing about this for a Super Bowl–timed Democracy To Do List tomorrow.
Literally the nickname for the USPS is snail mail. Why are they now in charge of something with strict deadlines!?

Reformer questions:
Is the reform an improvement for voter experience?
Does it make voters feel better represented?
Does it make electeds more accountable to their constituents?
Happy Thanksgiving! It’s still civic engagement season! More here: open.substack.com/pub/womanoff...
So bummed I can’t attend this as an audience member.
FYI, Orleans. It’s just about town meeting time.
If you follow me you’re probably a voter. It starts with us. Part 1: be welcoming. open.substack.com/pub/womanoff...
This week (as with many weeks) people are witnessing how accountability works (or doesn’t work) with our elected officials.
It’s Substack Day at Democracy To Do List! Let’s talk turnout.
That’s not enough.
We don’t need better Democrats — we need better elections.
And I’m glad the internet is mad too.
But here’s the thing — once they’re in office, there’s (basically) nothing we can do. Next election, someone will tell me they’re “better than the alternative.”
I’m big mad at Democrats trying to take away healthcare.
I am standing in Logan airport (started in SeaTac) after an incredibly long night of flying and layovers and I was wondering what was good about this experience. This has to be it.
The other noteworthy piece about how long it takes is that it’s just accepted as part of the voting culture here.
There is a predictable time that ballot counts are dropped every day. Voters and news outlets have learned what to expect and how to act.
It’s great.
We made it through another election day.
What's next? Well I'm interested in youth turnout - why it's so low (except when it's not!) and what we can do about it.
We can't wait to start until next November. Read more in next week's Substack.

Democracy isn’t just national. It’s neighborly.
Let's vote!
Tomorrow is Election Day.
I’m thinking about all the organizers, volunteers, and voters who show up—again and again.
Democracy isn’t just a moment.
"...I learned that our government runs on norms; unwritten rules that shape everything from shutdowns to elections. And it’s more than that. Those norms? They vary based on where you live."

Zinnia and I are on the same page this Monday. Why go for a stick when you know the whole tree is the problem?
Wondering if you should join a No Kings rally? Spoiler alert: you should.

Exactly. Voting should be easy. It should also matter. So we have to keep showing up, but we also have to think creatively about expanding how we vote.

I think it's cool that Washington elects a Public Lands Commissioner, but I know that won't work everywhere.
Voting is not one-size-fits-all, neither are campaigns. Strategies and policies are hardly ever cookie-cutter. What's something that works in your state?
When it comes to the shutdown the usual suspects are doing their usual thing.
It can feel hopeless - but it's not. Stop worrying about the candidates, start working about the system that perpetuates the status quo.

Once a year in September we remind people to register to vote, the problem is that we're a few months too late for most states! Primaries started ages ago, and those are the elections that count. #ElectionReform #HowWeVote #VoterRegistrationDay
