Memo to Bari Weiss Re: CBS News: You’re doomed Bari Weiss has sold her company, The Free Press, to manage the decline of broadcast news at CBS. How many ways can it go wrong?

Just saying: My widowed grandmother Sarah Hoberman (1890-1974) was the smoked fish dueΓ±a de la bodega of Nagle Avenue although I believe that her store, which stocked pre WW2 canned goods, made less money than the neighborhood poker game she ran out of her Thayer Street apartment around the corner.

That's me, July 1969, in Colorado where Ken somewhat improbably was teaching at the Aspen School of the Arts & I even less probably was his feckless 20-year-old assistant. I learned how to thread a Kalart Victor (& outside of class dropped acid & had the revelation that Everything is Now.)
Thx Rob!

The ultimate underground movie--a lyrical junkyard allegory annotated w chunks of mainly ’30s found footage. β€œA documentary showcase for the underdog’s spontaneous, uncontrolled fantasy” (Parker Tyler), desperately, despairingly beautiful, never more relevant.

Ken Jacobs (1933-2025)

A great artist, a wonderful teacher, & speaking personally, a close friend for over 50 years. Linking to a piece I wrote to mark his 80th birthday.

Crashing into the zeitgeist against who-knows-what headwinds, Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another is a kick-ass, madcap, antifascist action flickβ€”imagine Lizzie Borden’s Born in Flames on big-budget steroids, served over ICE... Not only tumultuous but funny.

Working my way through the pile #3: Surprised this 1949 Hal Wallis production isn't better known. A noir "Woman's Film" (from a novel by June Truesdell) cum pop psychology drama (Spellbound et al), directed by perennially underrated Wm Dieterle, it asserts a rape victim's right to self defense.

As did Jabotinsky & the Revisionists. I don't know any term to describe their contempt for Diasporic Jews other than "antisemitic." If you have a better term, please advise.

Addressing the present moment In this urgent, wide-ranging & clear-eyed piece, M Gessen recalls the Polish-Jewish teenager whose act of despair, assassinating a Nazi diplomat in Paris, provided the Nazis with their pretext for the 1938 state pogrom Krystallnacht.
