This was the result in part of states conferring citizenship & changed with the passage of...you got it, the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution.

Just going to note that in the 19th century free Black Americans were required to find guarantors to post bonds or to post bonds themselves *to enter certain US states* (Ohio, Illinois, Virginia, Missouri, etc.), a policy meant to keep those states racially White & limit citizenship.

They admitted it might come off stalkerish but they just wanted to say they felt encouraged knowing they just happened upon this book as an aspiring woman academic in these times. I found it very charming, tbh!

A student wrote me an email titled β€œI’ve Inherited Your Book!” It was a used copy of How to Write a BA Thesis w/ the receipt from my purchase 20 yrs ago still inside. They looked me up, found I was a professor & wanted to share how they thought this must be a sign of luck in their endeavor πŸ˜†

People in the US are hyperaware of the racial dimensions of our politics, and a sizable portion of media energy is dedicated towards occluding this common knowledge.

More and more I think the trouble was putting Nation and state together. You can have nations. And you can have states. But they should not be coextensive.

This is really a thing that we have to take more seriously. The richest ones aren’t into selling you anything. They want control over governance & people in thrall so that they can extract at will and in perpetuity. They’re not robber barons. They’re much worse.

That’s an unfortunate delusion, to be sure.

Keynes was very right about this. The expectation that the market will be rational (for better or worse) isn’t a good bet in crises where culture is in chaos. We’ve never lived through a period like the one at the turn of the last century that taught him that. Until now.

The trouble w/ ideologies (capitalism & socialism) that thinks it’s scientific & divides people into self-interested classes is that they mostly ignore those interests & separations are cultivated & maintained socially, psychologically, & emotionally.

the USA built a system of higher education so good that smart/rich people from across the world came here, spending billions to learn here, subsidizing education for Americans while spending money to live in our cities and towns. our government arbitrarily decided we should stop doing that

The Budget Lab at Yale University, a nonpartisan research center, updated its tariff tracker on Friday. It calculated that American consumers will have to contend with an average effective tariff rate of 18.3 percent, the highest since 1934. As a result, the center estimates that price increases will cost each household on average $2,400 this year. Shoe prices, for example, are expected to rise 40 percent in the short run. America’s total economic output β€” its gross domestic product β€” is estimated to shrink by about $120 billion annually in the years to come.

I like this definition a lot. I don’t think it has to be idealized. It can just be what we take society to be for - you’re metaphor is one of battle not seamless achievement so I think it works for non ideal theory.

Faculty Support of George Mason’s President Draws Federal Investigation

Faculty who wrote to defend their president and object to a DOJ investigation of their university...are now being investigated by the DOJ.
The most banal defense of free speech and academic freedom will trigger the full wrath of the US government now.

It appears to be a protection racket which these universities believe it is wiser to enter into than meaningfully accessing their endowments and/or pooling their resources. They’d have to fight/persuade their boards to do either/both of the last two&that doesn’t appear to be a tack they’re taking.

Most research universities have been fronting the multi million costs that are usually covered by federal money (&which have been withheld w/out explanation). They seem to believe making deals will restore that operating money. Of course there’s little reason to suspect one payment will be enough.
