I further entropy, usually by trying (and failing) to bring order to my little corner of the chaos.

Jellyfin has music streaming and is fairly easy to set up on your internal-only network to serve files you have (or can rip from a licensed source 😉). Running it open to the Internet is fraught if you're not up on modern security practices. But I've used it for almost six months, now, and it's great

I still occasionally think of the cases where a guy got only 1 vote -- his own -- and had an awkward conversation with his wife, or the guy who lost a coin-flip to break the tie whose wife simply didn't vote that cycle.

It's not generally hard, we just need to get in the habit of small-ball voting

@merkley.senate.gov and @wyden.senate.gov, this might affect Finance and the Budget, if the admin is cooking the books on inflation numbers.

I'm also old enough to remember that it was Trump on his way out the door who negotiated the disastrous timeline for exiting Afghanistan in such a disordered way on such a short timeline that Biden couldn't really plan a better one.

Yes, Biden took the blame, but it was still Trump's incompetence.

Just so we're all clear, this is a war crime and would be punishable by life or death under U.S. law.

Love taking Amtrak when I can, not least because there's no TSA security-theatre -- you show up, gather when your train is called, head to your train, stash your stuff, go to your seat. No drama, no taking off your shoes and belt (unless you pay for Pre-✅), just simple travel.

Doesn't have to suck

"I don't want a raise because I'll lose money when I go up into the next tax bracket," is one of those phrases that make me want to reach for a whiteboard and/or a bottle of strong spirits. 😭

I'm devastated by the antisemitic attack at one of our nation's largest reform synagogues. My heart is with the entire Temple Israel congregation.

Antisemitism has no place in our country. We owe it to our Jewish siblings to stamp it out and ensure they can worship without fear.

Image of two posts on Threads, the first containing a picture of the Strait of Hormuz and the surrounding land with a blue line across the Musandam Peninsula with a red arrow pointing to the line and red text reading "CANAL"

The top post by user kevinrkirk has text that reads, "Why are we bothering with the Strait of Hormuz when we could simply do this? Explain it to me like I'm 5."

The second post by user suahuatica in reply reads, "MOUNTAIN HARD AND BIG, WATER NO UP. MANY MANY DIG DIG."

My favorite explainer so far:

I keep seeing people ask about the 25th Amendment.

Guys. His entire Cabinet is walking around in shoes that don’t fit because they’re scared to take them off.

The 25th is never happening.

There is something darkly comical about vibe coding forcing a bunch of engineers who likely derided engineering management now managing a corral of AI agents that basically act like a mix between Amelia Bedelia and the guy from Memento

My wife-at-the-time got upset at me when I got one of those teddy-bear-with-a-leash backpacks when the kiddo was a toddler, which I thought made a lot of sense at the time! We had a dasher. 😂

Yeah, the "screaming houseplant" stage is the newbie zone giving you time to get ready for toddlerhood. Little buggers are *fast* once they get past the scooting phase.

My kid is about 14 and able to take care of themself for a couple hours if I sleep in or have to run an errand.

Sooo... You might get some decent sleep by *checks watch* 2039 or so.

Solidarity! It gets better! ❤️

Always interesting picking up my tuba after a break. I keep forgetting that, yes, I DO need to keep practicing deep breathing or I'll lose that capacity if I don't use it. 😅

Different issue from not playing trumpet for a bit, where my lips lose their tone until I practice to get them back in shape.

Welp, Bill speaks my mind. If trans people's existence isn't compatible with Chili's values, then my money as a customer isn't, either.

Into the garbage bin they go, right next to Target.

We don’t need your shitty brands! You’re expendable but trans people are not.

What funding?

The regime cut payments off in July, and the Senate passed a budget in September that rescinded the unpaid funds. NPR has already been cut off.

They have nothing to gain by being sycophantic, just muscle-memory.

Fun fact: they had a sister ship's bell, bc they lost theirs over the side (before Dad got aboard) about the same time the USS Force (MSO-445) caught fire in '73 & burned to the waterline in under 5 minutes.

They were TOP of the fleet at damage control, because even a small fire meant swimming home

Also, those boats were highly specialized. My dad was XO on an Aggressive-class MSO in the Cold War, and they were made of wood with aluminum engines to prevent a magnetic signature.

They could do ~5 knots (6mph) while sweeping, and that is going to take forever with the 28-mile Strait of Hormuz.

How many other prisoners will be freed by the governor simply by expressing contrition, damn their judicially-imposed legal sentences or the severity of their (convicted) crimes?

Oh, only the white ones with powerful political friends? Uh huh... 🤨

War is Not the Answer - QuakerSpeak Diane Randall of FCNL (Friends Committee on National Legislation) talks Quaker pacifism, pentagon spending, and the military industrial complex.

When Diane Randall, then general secretary of @fcnl.bsky.social, spoke with QuakerSpeak in 2014, the U.S. government's propensity to seek out military solutions to international crises, was a key topic. "Conflict is inevitable," as Diane said, "but violent conflict, we believe, is not inevitable."

A lot of people - even nominally "people in tech" - either don't understand or outright discount the huge amounts of human work that surrounds the code.

But that's just meaningless busy-work for bureaucrats, I guess? The real skill is matching curly braces and remembering the semicolons.
