Roger is over there, keeping watch, but will help if you need it (especially if there's food).

A buddy and I used to joke about opening a restaurant with an innocuous name like Out, where every table is a booth with high sides and a front-curtain, a light you can flip on to signal the server, and a menu themed around 20th-century spycraft.

Been harping on this for five years, now, but we need a national ban on the use of chemical weapons in the US by all levels of law enforcement.

Because I keep hearing Republicans talk about how my city is a hell hole, I decided to go down to the ICE facility and see what things look like for myself. As you can see from the video, it’s not the war zone that Trump describes!

Republicans are, like, 0-for-17 or something on blaming Democrats for government shutdowns, across several decades and no matter who controlled Congress.

People know the Republicans really don’t care about running the government. Certainly not about paying for it.

Still bums me out that the reason Topol (who did a wonderful job in the movie!) played Tevye in the movie and not Zero Mostel, who opened the role on Broadway and defined the part, was because he was blacklisted by the McCarthy BS. Seems like something we should consider these days for some reason.

I fully agree. I liked "Go fash, lose cash" as rhyme, but we need to make clear that these are good values that we want companies to have, actually, and we will spend accordingly.

Pluralistic: The real (economic) AI apocalypse is nigh (27 Sep 2025) – Pluralistic: Daily links from Cory Doctorow

This whole administration, aside from the gross negligence, malice, and rampant illegality and lawlessness, is just straight-up elder abuse. I cannot imagine doing this nor allowing this to be done to a grandparent with dementia. Just ... cruel on top of cruelty.

It was fun introducing this to my then-13-year-old by watching The Highlander and saying, "Okay, here comes the villain. Bonus points if you can recognize what else he's been in." Didn't click until I did the Mr. Krabs cackle, then it blew her mind. 🀣

It's what Paul Krugman termed "wingnut-welfare" at least a decade ago -- the web of think-tanks and "non-profit" boards that support these people when they flame out in public. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ Nice work if you can get it, I guess...

Exactly. With these kinds of authoritarians, ya gotta watch what they do, not what they say. Thune et alia are *saying* a bunch, but then voting -- acting -- to support, or acting to suppress ways to stop, what's going on.

Talk is cheap, and their voters need to remember this.

An absolutely insane story about false confession: man reports his dad missing, police pressure him to confess to his dad's murder (lying about finding his dad's body, threatening his dog, etc), man confesses and tries to kill himself, dad comes home perfectly fine.

It's all fun and games until a cop handles a Tylenol gelcap with no gloves and within seconds their socks are bothering them.

just want to add that even if Tylenol did cause autism that wouldn't be a big deal because being autistic isn't a bad thing

It adds a whole new level to the Jehovah's Witnesses knocking on doors. Their belief is that the Rapture cannot come until everyone has been given a chance to convert or not. The goal of the door-knocking is to literally end the world.

That doesn't mean we should be rude to them, but firmly decline

we should wrap ourselves in the flag while defending trans rights. it says in our founding documents that we are all equal and to say that any of us are not goes up against what america is supposed to stand for.

real patriots support trans rights. otherwise you're unamerican.

No way the Empire holds across years of occupying the Federation, though. Too fragile to handle such a fractious and creative collection of societies. Insurgencies are, by their nature, decentralized, and we've seen how poorly the Empire deals with them, even without space wizards.

Weren't Star Destroyers more of a fleet weapon? I guess the bigger question is if the Federation could field a large enough fleet to take on the SDs, plus their cruisers and support wings of fighters. IIRC, the Federation did so towards the end of DS9, so it's possible.

I'm still waiting for the shoe to drop on Last Week Tonight, but also, he's basically been daring them to cancel him for the last two or three mergers, so I'm sure he'll get the axe -- when, not if. ... And then I'll finally cancel my HBO sub, because they have little else unique & easily available.
