Coffee cup waiting at tip of stairs for the gods to knock it over

Every morning I go into my office and take yesterday’s coffee cup to the top of the stairs so I’ll remember to carry it to the kitchen. This ritual is called DARING THE GRAVITY GODS.

That's good advice -- focus on the elements you love. Make 'em as strong and integral to the story as possible, and the other stuff will fall away in the editing.
