To be fair, I did think it was fun to have a laugh about the Dolly Dimpley-ass space marine sidekick for Samus, I guess I also just didn't have that much hype for Metroid Prime 4 to begin with (I'm plenty satisfied with Dread) so anything it does just doesn't bother me as much.

I recall watching this video essay arguing against story in Metroid with a specific point that Zero Mission's introduction of the Varia Suit is a sign of Overexplaining Prequel Disease (while footage of the Least Intrusive Cutscene ever of Samus getting the suit at Chozo Trial plays).

Like, man idk

(though, tbh I also dunno when people started having this specific and particular precious view of "Metroid as an Artistic Achievement" that curiously relies on deliberately ignoring/dismissal of large swaths of it to preserve that sanctity, so maybe I'm just out of tune with the conversation)

Oh I thought people were just joking around & being fake-upset, I didn't think people Literally Actually thought he was gonna be there the entire game

God that Toei Repaint Gold just never looks good no matter how much time passes.

I tend to forgive it more for the Capaldi era, where it was sold it as the character's retirement party almost & offer an emotional conclusion to the series up to that point overall.

It didn't quite carry over into subsequent eras, but such ia the nature of these things.

I think generally much of game analysis & reviews headed by the big personalities are far more often "on the wrong" than most people even realise.
ZP was one, but if you start thinking back to like others in 00s Escapist, Extra Credits, or Blistered Thumbs, etc, you can find A Lot of misses.

Pop culture osmosis always has a horrendous habit of having permanent goldfish memory, which combined with ever accelerating trend-chasing tendencies & limited curiousity makes for a frustrating affair.

(tbf slightly, I did check the video itself and they did cover Michelle Yeoh's pre-Hollywood work like Yes Madam. The SAO aspect is just really lame, and indicative of how often pop culture osmosis has permanent goldfish memory)

If I were a simpler man, I'd say there's prob a lot of correlation you can draw between modern slop and the moment Hong Kong movies stopped being the default gold standard for action filmmaking.
