๐What a gang!Fjord enthusiasts from all over the world - Chile, Europe, Canada, Alaska, New Zealand, Greenland and, somewhat surprisingly, Costa Rica - have discussed "Fjords in a changing climate" in Stalheim, Norway.I've learnt so much - and I look forward to meet these nice people in Chile, 2027!
๐Everything is ready - I hope! - for the workshop "Fjords in a changing climate" at Stalheim, Norway, next week. I'm super-excited to welcome more than seventy fjord researchers from all over the world to learn about and discuss their research! bjerknes.uib.no/en/fjords-in...
There's a new Dr Darelius in town - big congratulations to my little sister!
๐We're hiring! Two PhD positions in physical oceanography at the Geophysical Institute, University of Bergen just opened up (deadline 3/6). Apply to work with us on ocean dynamics in the Southern Ocean! www.jobbnorge.no/en/available... AND www.jobbnorge.no/en/available...
The Seasonal changes in Disko Bay #hydrography, #Greenland, has finally been well described! Both the Glacial and Atlantic forcing has importance. Open for public review through May; egusphere.copernicus.org/preprints/20...

Recent?? You need to be very paleo-minded to refer to the last 1 million year as recent :-)
...the answer? The secch-disk "disappeared" after only 3.5m in Lurefjorden!
Back to the basics - checking water transparency with a secchi-disk and students from UiB. The "disappeared" at 12m in Masfjorden - what will it be in the supposedly murky Lurefjorden? Bets are on!
๐ Mooring deployment with a view! In Masfjorden, Norway with students from the University of Bergen
๐At sea again! This time with students from the Geophysical Institute, University of Bergen: watersampling
Happy math-loving mother! Just got a call from my math-hating daughter asking me to confirm that the solution to a math-problem she and her friends were discussing on the way to school was right :-)

We just had the first cancellation from a US scientist who can no longer participate in our workshop on "Fjords in a changing climate" because the title includes the forbidden c** word. Insane, unbelievable, but most of all very, very sad.
Why not? You could try during the first session and have people vote about whether to continue? But there need to be room for it in the program...
Amazing weekend in Finse, Norway!
At our last institute seminar they gave us a few minutes after each presentation to chat with our neighbour about the talk and potential questions before one could ask questions to the presenter -sort of like "think, pair, share" if you know that from teaching. I found that very useful!
A non-packed program = plenty of time to interact
...or so we thought - no connection with the CTD so we're heading back home :-(
๐New day, new CTDs! We're collecting data to do research on the effect of climate change on the deep water renewal rate and the oxygenation of Norwegian fjords.
๐Fjord oceanography: mooring recovery (can you spot the buoys?) and water sampling all day long!
๐ Heading into the fjords for oceanographic fieldwork with students - beautiful scenery... and beautiful pancake ice!!
No luck :-( M6 does not want to come up... After several hours dredging Polarstern had to move on to the next site
Eagerly waiting for dredging-news from Polarstern and the Weddell Sea... Will they be able to get M6 to the surface?? Supposed to happen this afternoon!
๐Phase-sensitive radars (or ApRES amongst friends) are so cool! This is how the ice thickness at site M2 on the Fimbul ice shelf, Antarctica, has changed lately. Superimposed on the overall thinning (a combination of strain, snow compaction, and basal melt) you see the effect of tides on the ice!
I want to sign! prof. Elin Darelius, University of Bergen. Thanks for writing!
Did they fish them up?
They will hopefully do so on the way back - fingers crossed! (I'm unfortunately not down there)
Nope, no time now... They will try on the way out... Fingers crossed!
I'm at home... I hope/think they are trying right now!
It's still there! Polarstern tried to contact&release my second mooring (M6) this morning but got no answer... so they gave up and moved on to M3 (which is now safely recovered&redeployed -jippie!!)... But when passing over the site on the way back this appeared on the fishfinder! M6 is still there!
