our beloved wee Monty died aged 16 just 5 months ago & a thing I was somehow completely unprepared for these past few weeks was the fresh new wave of grief that’s hit. I’m not sure we deserve dogs & I feel very lucky to have known & loved some very special ones. (I think all dogs are very special.)

photo of Charlie, a tri-color rat terrier, from his very sturdy shoulders up to the top of his very alert ears. his face is black & brown & his chest is white. photo of Charlie, a 17lb rat terrier, lying on sofa facing away from but leaning against his human (out of frame). his front left leg is dangling off the edge of the sofa & he’s on top of a camo-print blanket because it’s unseasonably warm for early March. his chest and stomach are covered with white fur, but he has large patches of black fur on his back.

we adopted Charlie 3 weeks ago yesterday. he’s very friendly & has a charming spring in his step! likes: sitting on shoulders, barking at squirrels, snuggling. dislikes: storms. he has some health issues. he’s very grumbly, in an adorable way. we think he’ll keep us. ❤️

The most useful political distinction to pay attention to in my experience is asking whether children and young adults are most likely to suffer harm from people inside or outside their family. Only people who say “inside” are sensitive to power dynamics that matter

The tech industry realized in the 1990s that if you make digitization about “access” everyone will think you mean for “the public” and not for them and well here we are.

Hey, if you're feeling like life has passed you by and you're too old to start something new, remember that John Brown was 55 before he killed his first pro-slavery settler in the Kansas Territory. It's never too late to follow your dreams.

The utterance of "A.I.'s inevitability" is one of the most stark pure performatives I've seen in my time working in higher ed. Every time it is uttered, it is clearly not reporting a fact about the world but instead actively trying to create the reality it narrates. We can and must refuse.

Bulldozers moved over the ash. In their claws, the weight of souls. In their claws, a child traces her first word, her auntie claps with delight. In their claws, a young doctor graduates at Al Azhar, dreams of the years ahead. In their claws, three mothers eat pistachio ice creams, midst jokes, laughter, gossip, as the sun sinks into the sea. In their claws, an old man reads a book under the well-tended orange trees, turning each page with care, making notes in the margins. In their claws, are fragments of bones so loved that the universe in all its immeasurable immensity will never recover their loss.

Shame on NC State for firing an employee who, under the slimiest and most cowardly of circumstances, was filmed expressing commitment to students’ well-being.

7 Reasons Teens Say No to AI Some young people only turn to artificial-intelligence chatbots as a last resort, citing concerns about relationships, creativity, the environment and more.

As these teens describe, AI can diminish human relationships; devalue art; threaten the environment; lead to laziness; give unreliable results; pose privacy concerns; and be misused.

So, please, stop with the narratives of inevitability and let's embrace a pedagogy and politics of refusal.

Image of The Studio paper.

Can anyone very kindly help? I'm trying to locate a copy of an obscure 19th century American art journal: "The Studio. Devoted to Art, Artists, and Their Friends." Vol. II. No. 41. Published in New York, October 13, 1883. Just need to look up a reproduction of a painting in the journal.

no! & neither did I! I do regularly fantasize about disabling the horribly bright dusk-to-dawn light in our neighbor’s backyard…
