I know that their match in January was abandoned at half time. Which is not typical in most other clubs. Their fans stand out for their conduct, and should be treated accordingly.

Well quite. ALL English clubs were punished for the actions of some fans.

I should add that is VERY far from routine for home derby matches to be called off. That alone should tell you how concerning the behaviour of some of the MTA fans is. British teams have had to ban many fans for life in order to get a handle on hooliganism- perhaps MTA need to do the same.

There was a specific incident, just yesterday. Add the shocking scenes in Amsterdam in 2024 and it’s no surprise that they would be banned. If the Tel Aviv police cannot handle them, why should the police in Birmingham be asked to? People live near Villa park and have every right to be concerned.

There is a history of it, yes. Thankfully it is mostly in the past but for many years every single English fan - and the clubs, who were barred from European competition - was collectively punished for the actions of a few. I don’t see why MTA should be treated differently.

I can’t see the post you are replying to as I’m blocked, but honesty I would recommend deleting this. Hillsborough was not caused by fan violence, and families of the deceased had to fight for years against accusations that it was.

Great idea. My mum lives in a regular suburban estate (ie far from remote area) and had a power cut in the last fortnight. So a digital line isn’t really a solution. Perhaps I’ll speak to her MP too. Thanks!

I completely agree. It’s not been thought through at all. I believe there is a legal responsibility for the telecoms companies to supply the appropriate kit so I’m expecting the whole thing to stall.

The only advice anyone could offer me was to hope the switchover didn’t happen?!

This thread is really interesting as my mum is in the same position. I called her phone provider, and they said the council needed to update the technology on their Lifeline system. I phoned the council (Nottingham) and they said the technology doesn’t exist yet….

Yes, in the 90’s. Plus there are several other clubs cited in the article as having recently faced supporter bans in European tournaments - eg Ajax and Feyenoord. It’s not unusual if the police anticipate significant trouble.

Private Eye offers up an excellently scornful commentary on the relentless polling. It’s become ridiculous and has oversimplified our politics to dangerous levels of stupid and irresponsible.

I could not agree more. Labour have been left in the dust on their comms strategy and it will be unforgivable if they don’t address it - the whole country will suffer from their complacency in future.
