The Congo painting that Belgium can never show again
“It looks amazing, but the message is horrific."
The gargantuan Congo Panorama, unveiled at the 1913 Ghent World Exhibition, might be the biggest painting ever made. But it was a lie, meant to show visitors that the Belgian colonisers were friendly and peaceful - as a new AfricaMuseum exhibition reveals:

Professor Storms will speak about the (history of) research integrity, with a particular focus on scientific fraud. He will address not only spectacular cases that make the media, but also the “questionable research practices”: seemingly more “innocent” and everyday violations of integrity.

On 16 November 1935, Emile Francqui passed away. Few people have left such a significant mark on Belgian science. In the interwar period, he built an extensive network including the royal palace and established various scientific and financial organizations. In 1928, he helped found the FNRS.

In November 1915, the “emergency university” of Amersfoort closed — a Dutch university created for Belgian refugees during WO I. Its classes offered not just education, but also served a moral purpose and had to maintain a lasting bond with home.

Book cover of "Student Notes from Latin Europe (1400–1750): A Research Companion," edited by Xander Feys, Maxime Maleux, Andy Peetermans, and Raf Van Rooy. Published by Leuven University Press. The cover features a partial diagram of concentric celestial spheres and an anatomical drawing of a human head labeled with Latin terms for sensory faculties. The design is minimalist in beige and gray tones. There is also an open access logo and the logo of Lueven University Press in the bottom left corner.
In the new #openaccess companion on student notes from Latin Europe (@leuvenup.bsky.social), our own Lorenz Demey, together with collaborators, contributes a chapter arguing that student notes hold great promise as sources for intellectual #history 👇 lup.be/book/student... #HPS #earlymodern #philsky
