A hand holds a smartphone displaying an academic article titled "Informed decision making in the context of HIV prevention: an experience sampling study among men who have sex with men" on the Taylor & Francis website (tandfonline.com). The phone screen shows the first page of the article with authors listed. The background features a pastel rainbow wave pattern, reinforcing LGBTQ+ themes.

πŸ§ πŸ’¬ In HIV prevention, how you choose matters. Our new study shows that informed decision making helps people feel safer – regardless of momentary priorities.

I haven’t posted here in a while – not because I haven’t been working, but because it’s felt a bit strange to share updates πŸ’»βœ¨

With everything going on in the world – so many attacks on human rights, so much inequality – it can feel a bit hollow to post about work, even when that work is all about inclusion, health, and justice πŸŒπŸ’”

Sometimes I wonder if it’s really moving the needle at all.

Still, I’m reminding myself that sharing isn’t just about achievements. It can also be about doubts, questions, and finding others who feel the same.

If you’ve been feeling this tension too, I’d love to hear how you deal with it πŸ—£οΈ

Just posted this on LinkedIn and then realised it also applies to Bluesky πŸ™ƒ

Usability testing is essential in intervention development but can often feel time-consuming – but it doesn't have to be. Our new preprint offers a hands-on guide to rapid analysis during usability testing and shares our reflections on the process. πŸ§‘πŸΌβ€πŸ’»

Key Insight:
βœ… Higher levels of informed decision making made people’s perceived HIV prevention safety less dependent on how much they prioritised safety at the time.

In other words: People may make safer choices when those choices are informed, regardless of how much they prioritise safety.

Person holding a smartphone displaying a preprint webpage titled "Informed Decision Making in the Context of HIV Prevention" on a colourful background.

HIV prevention offers _many_ options.

πŸ” Our study explored how #InformedDecisionMaking affects the link between safety priorities and perceived safety.

Felix Steup led the research for his master’s thesis, supervised by Hanne Zimmermann & me. We’re proud of his work and commitment to open science!

Starter packs and lists are too clubby. Let's all take responsibility for alerting their owners to names that should be on there. And yes I am talking about equality, diversity, inclusion and decolonising. Find the list owner, suggest a name(s). Simples.

A colourful, wavy background in pastel tones of yellow, pink, green, blue, purple, and beige. In the centre, a white rectangle contains the following text in a monospaced font: 'I am Thomas, a queer assistant professor at the Open University of the Netherlands applying mixed methods to two interconnected research lines: I apply behavioural and decision-making sciences to support people with societal transitions and work to make the social sciences more inclusive towards marginalised populations.

I thought, with the influx of new followers, it would be a good time to re-introduce myself. πŸ™‚πŸ‘‡
