An incredible trip into the Kaimanawa ranges โฆ thanks to members of NZDF who hosted us โฆ the horses are looking so well this spring, so many gorgeous foals. These are descendants of artillery horses turned out after WWI who started these herds. Now they are our taonga. Our responsibility.

Paleolithic cave art of wild horse.
Vast landscape of the Gobi Desert with a band of golden takhi in the middle distance.
Counting down the days, now, until I fly out to Ulaanbataar, on my way to the Gobi B Strictly Protected Area โ three more weeks in Mongolia, with opportunities to see and study the takhi (Equus ferus przewalskii) living fully wild lives in their ancestral homeland!

Late evening sun through a grove of old growth totara trees. Magic.
Nothing's up. Just the sun going down behind the trees, bathing the winter paddocks with crazy green-gold light.

The Helm of Awe! Are you in Iceland? How wonderful!! I was there at this time two years ago. Remarkable. I love the social history as much as the geologic, the flora and the fauna.

Small bird sitting on a branch in a thick Totara canopy. Bright turquoise blue feathers on his back, a creamy chest (almost peachy), white collar, long bill, squat posture.
Spot my friend, kลtare. This little fella has graced my days at the farm for a couple of years, elusive and solitary โ until this year, when he's been joined by a female (a mate?). Kลtare!!

Young black filly mare with a thin white blaze, grazing under a totara tree, stops to investigate the exposed root. Green vegetation, sunlight, peace.
Can't get enough of watching young Whiskers explore her world. Today, checking out the oldest Totara tree on our farm, she licked and brushed her whiskers (vibrassae) at the tree's exposed root for several minutes, deeply engaged in her exploration. I love watching horses.

Two horses in a field, one chestnut, one black with white socks. The black horse has walked up onto a small bridge, a place where she liked to explore when she was a little foal. This is her first time back in this particular paddock, and she went straight to the bridge to walk over it and stand for a moment, in contemplation.
I love watching horses. When Whiskers and Freddie were reunited after months apart, they picked up where they left off ... Whiskers loved the little bridge to nowhere in the paddock where she was born. Returning to it 2 years later, she walks over, pausing to relish whatever feeling it provides.

Portrait of a very happy woman wearing academic attire with black robe and red shawl, carrying a large bouquet of flowers whilst wearing a very funky Knox bonnet. Standing at the top of the stairs with a fabulous toothed fish sculpture formaing in an arc above the stairs. Other graduates and their families and friends walking by below, under a mottled blue-grey sky.
