If you make something useful, even if it’s only helpful to you, package it up and share it! Now you’ve shared code with the world and it’s more convenient for you to reuse (just install it, no more c&p files from old projects)

If you want your leaders to make better decisions on what you should be building, get them data. Show them hard numbers on what users are doing (not what you THINK they're doing). Build an admin area where they can see the app data.

if you find yourself retrieving lots of data from your database, and the looping over all the records to filter them, or to calculate aggregated totals from them…please pause and rethink your approach. you can almost always do that stuff in your query and improve performance!

troubleshooting techniques:

- reproduce the error yourself
- read logs
- view metrics

when that doesn’t work…

- master the many ways to say f*ck
- add lots of log statements and see which ones don’t print anything
- start commenting out chunks of code until the error goes away
