Just the good news we need - a nature-based solution for climate change mitigation that could be scaled up to help with carbon sequestration plus is a tasty food source - at least for those of us that like oysters #ClimateChange #CO2reduction #OysterFarming

Climate Change Opens Up New Fishing Possibilities for LargeβScale Trawling Vessels Off West Greenland
Climate change is transforming marine ecosystems, opening new fishing possibilities for large-scale trawling vessels in the Arctic. This study investigates the potential for new fishing grounds to em....
Matthew Hatton's first (!) PhD paper is out, mapping the potential expansion of large-scale trawling off West #Greenland as sea ice retreats. New fishing grounds, new bottom habitats; a new challenge for ecosystem-based #fisheries management.

Whales have big eyes, so they should have good eyesight.
But as it turns out, humpbacks have relatively few retinal ganglion cells--the photoreceptors on the back of the eye that capture light.
The result is that, from a distance, a net is hard to pick out, and harder to avoid.

MPA results in a decrease in burrowing brittle stars because of increased predation pressure by flatfish. So food web effects thus override the decrease in mortality of macrofauna caused by the cessation of trawling.

Closures can be effective to protect benthic habitats, but not always.
After 17 years excluding bottom fishing in Georges Bank regions, only subtle differences were found between benthic communities of adjacent open and closed areas with no consistent patterns across taxa.
