Because it feels relevant as we continue to evaluate the media and our representatives’ statements, my favorite way to identify the active vs. passive voice.

Always remember that part of what you are doing as a game designer is creating an instruction manual for the GM. You want it to be clear for the GM what they should do when they're running your creature, you don't want to just have a bunch of 2-action activities and no guidance on how they interact.

I talk about dragons a lot but dragons need to recharge their breath weapon after they use it. The GM is naturally guided to use draconic frenzy while breath weapon recharges, and draconic frenzy helps them roll more so they're more likely to crit and therefore more likely to refresh breath weapon.

You can get creative with your reaction triggers, but you want the players to feel rewarded when they do learn about the creature rather than punished for not knowing something was coming.

You may be tempted to "balance" powerful abilities by making them 3-actions, but be careful your 3-action activities don't require positioning setup or you'll never be able to pull them off. Make sure the creature still has something to do when they lose an action to slow or stun debuffs.

Loren and I did a creature building episode of the Legend Lore podcast and I've gone on RFC a couple times to talk about building creatures. The main thing, though idk how best to explain this succinctly, is to imagine you're GMing the creature and make sure you have something to do.

Hard agree! Monster creation in pf2e is actually a blast and you should do it as much as possible.

Jess also highlights something that people also confuse: houserules versus homebrew. The former is changing the mechanics of the game to operate differently, the latter is adding content.

PF2 has directions for creating your own creatures, you're engaging with the base game when you use them! Use them! Go ahead!

"Wait until you've tried the game before changing things" is for stuff like "I want to give back attack of opportunity to every character and monster in the game."

Lots of people in online PF2 spaces tell new players "wait until you've tried the game before changing things or creating house rules." This isn't BAD advice, but I've started seeing it handed out when people ask "can I make my own creatures in PF2" and it's an INAPPLICABLE answer to that question!

Haha! Danessa Myricks is a makeup artist (very talented, mother) with a cosmetics brand that focuses a lot on colour and texture. Not all of her skin products work for me, but they're at least always doing new, interesting things.

There's a steam game with a format similar to the touch typing edugames called Learn Japanese Kana & Vocab With Sushi that seems neat. I can't attest to using it personally, though, it absolutely hates that I type on dvorak and won't recognize the layout.
