Shingles was the worst pain Iβve ever had.
Before I got good drugs, my breath moving across my skin hurt. I put on a silk top β the weight of it hurt.
It lasted 2 weeks.

Not a factor now. :-)
Good point!
My main criteria will be comfortable on my face and with the helmet. Definitely donβt want tinting in grey Pittsburgh and riding at dusk.
I had an old-fashioned bubble light built as a nightlight, and a friend who was a chemist happened to see the box that it came in, which listed the ingredients in the liquid. He got very pale.

We had a lot of questions about local utilities, finding contractors and the like. Our kind neighbors did their best with their limited English while we were working on learning Flemish and French.

He worked at a bakery, and some mornings would drop a loaf of bread between our door & screen door, so he was very welcome to the sugar. π₯
Our block is low-traffic enough that many years we luck into a visit or two from roving packs of carolers. These are the Chestnut Street Singers.

Elon Musk's billions also allow him an unreasonable amount of influence.
At REI, I can walk into an actual store that's not very far from my house, try things on, and get assistance from knowledgeable, union employees.
I probably could find goggles in the store at Dick's Sporting Goods, and they did destroy their inventory of AR-15s, but they're further away.
If Greenfield & Mondays at 3:45pm doesn't work for you, but you're interested in getting involved, check out the Pittsburgh Overpass Project for another day & bridge, or just help out with a donation to buy banner supplies!

We'd like more volunteers, because we don't want a really small crew. There's the potential for some jerks to stop and heckle. That hasn't happened yet on this bridge, but we always keep safety in mind.
We got lots of waves and honks today, as always!
Mondays: www.mobilize.us/mobilize/eve...
A banner hung on the chainlink of the bridge with tall, bright yellow letters reading IMPEACH & CONVICT. Three people, bundled up in warm coats and hats, are waving flags: an American flag, a Pride flag, and flag that reads ABOLISH ICE.
Three bundled up people holding flags: an American flag, a Pride flag, and flag that reads ABOLISH ICE. You can see one end of the big banner, and the rolling cart used to bring the supplies from a volunteer's car.
A man smiling and holding an American flag.
And where was my bike swooping down a steep hill to this afternoon? To join the Pittsburgh Overpass Project on the Greenfield Bridge!
We're still rocking IMPEACH & CONVICT, oriented to be read by slow rush hour traffic. Two new people showed up! We could use a few more.
Stylish! My helmet is bright yellow, so I should be some vivid contrast going on.
09.12.2025 01:52 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Gee, Kate, what would Canadians know about cold weather gear?
09.12.2025 01:49 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I should probably take my bike helmet to REI and check out ski googles.
09.12.2025 01:48 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Argh! "They donβt need to go very glasses" was supposed to be "They don't need to go over glasses".
That's why I wasn't thinking ski googles, necessarily.
I was talking to someone who tried safety glasses, and she said there was still too much wind for her.
I'm thinking 15Β°F and freewheeling downhill at maybe 18mph (the hills in Pittsburgh are STEEP).
I know that with regular glasses, 40Β°F is miserable.
Need some cyclist advice! Riding a bike in Pittsburgh means going pretty fast down hills, and in cold weather, my eyes are tearing a lot. Are there goggles that fit with a helmet and work?
(They donβt need to go very glasses.)

if starbucks is going to keep understaffing our stores or listen to barista feedback, why not go on strike π€· itβs time we all stand up to fight for better pay, scheduling, & protections in a union contract, + an end to union-busting & remedy hundreds of unfair labor practices!

Countless worlds are being shattered by the cruel policies of Trump's DHS and ICE's violent deportation agenda.
I joined @oversightdemocrats.house.gov in LA to hear from people who have been detained by ICE and the inhumane conditions they faced. For Trump and his cronies, the cruelty is the point.
Oh, that sucks!

A magazine cover, with a single illustration covering the entire page, and no headlines over the top. A hand illustration -- perhaps watercolors -- shows a snowy day and an empty road heading towards the viewer. In the distance, a cozy christmas tree store surrounded by green trees, some cut and some still standing, with a cozy cabin behind. In the foreground, a jaunty woman with hat and sunglasses and scarf bicycles toward us, with a christmas tree horizontally held on the front rack of her bike and a black scotty dog running alongside. She and the shop and the cabin are all in pastels; pinks and purples and white. Her white scarf and hat match the white snow on the store and cabin. It is a cheerful, jaunty, undaunted tone, and evenly spaced big snowflakes float down over it all. At the top the magazine name, The New Yorker, the date Dec. 19, 1942, and the Price: 15 cents. At the bottom is the signature of the artist, Garrett Price https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garrett_Price
It's time once again for my annual #treebybike post. This is the 12/19/42 cover of @newyorker.com, so one full year after the attack on Pearl Harbor. This would be the first real Christmas alone, or without a family member, for millions in the US. Gas and tire rationing had begun earlier that year.ποΈ
