I want research to actually push the envelope in meaningful ways instead chasing sexy ghosts. I want research to lead in meaningful impact, however small. Not study the same 5 basic paradigms in 200,000 permutations and draw some far-fetched conclusions.

Okay I'm done ranting. It's been a long day.

Is the private sector perfect? Absolutely not. It absolutely has it's problems. But if you don't like a job, you can get another one. You CAN STILL do interesting research, and you WILL STILL feel intellectually challenged. In fact, leaving academia has arguably made me a BETTER scientist.

The issue with academia is that it really has lights you into believing that your worth IS your productivity all the while paying you pennies. There are THOUSANDS of PhDs new and old vying for 1 of 5 jobs every year (5 that year if you're lucky).

First of all, to say that this is the better system is so delusional because this is THE ONLY SYSTEM YOU HAVE. Also, no one is saying all industry position is the same, just like you wouldn't expect each grad student to have the same academic experience. Some labs suck. Some jobs suck.

Was talking to someone who's currently drinking the academic koolaid and it frustrates me to no end that they really do believe it's the better system even though it's dysfunctional, corrupt, and exploitive. And the comparison is always industry (or this version of it they have in their head).
