It’s a first-person story, so nobody gets the kind of visibility that the main character does. I do make a point to make the villain’s motivations make sense from their perspective (the monologue was “what he was doing was dangerous and needed to be in the right hands”, which is true).

Doing “pawn” in the sense of “cats-paw”. Close enough. The start of the big villain monologue.

Yeah, it’s urban fantasy, so a modern setting. And I’ve avoided all the copout tropes that urban fantasy loves to use to explain why they don’t just look stuff up on the web. 😄
