I'm repeating myself but the key to explaining Trump's love of tariffs is: He literally believes any money coming into the Federal gov't belongs to *him, personally*.

So when importers pay tariffs, *Trump thinks he gets richer*. The fact that the cost is passed on to Americans is irrelevant to him.

In case you were confused why Alp is standing in a Māori ward, he has stood for Te Tai Tokerau in the past. His more recent antics are well-documented, but I recommend reading about his earlier harassment of the CEO of BNZ at the head of a "Māori separatist" militia. archive.ph/201209100500...

We're at the 'we're very sorry we hired a trans person' stage in the UK's systematic erasure of trans people.

If ChatGPT is not consistently dependable, how are we suppose to use it for actual work?
Discussion
It's behavior and results can randomly change due to some OpenAl tweaking that's opaque.
On some days it can't even keep track of a fresh chat, it can't do calculations, it can't sort through a chat to extract relevant information, and when it's suppose to refer to source material in a PDF, it doesn't.
All because OpenAl trained it for fluency and basically to simulate whatever it can for user satisfaction.
I can use it for general chats, philosophical stuff, therapy, but nothing serious. I'm pro Al, but I approach it with skepticism knowing it's undependable (as I do with anything I read).
And prompts can be interpreted/executed differently across users' own interaction with their Als so it's not truly scalable.
How does the business world / leaders expect staff to adopt Al if it's not consistently dependable? It doesn't even calculate like a calculator. If the internet start claiming 2+2=5, that's what it'll answer with.
I'd use it for hobbies and pet projects but I can't imagine using it for anything "mission critical".

The government's position on this is pretty extraordinary. It is, essentially, "yes we won in the Supreme Court but we didn't win *enough*."

That makes it clear that court decisions here are just the excuse; the govt just wants to crack down on the rights of Maori set by the previous National govt.

It is used in AML as a sanction when criminal prosecution wouldn't be appropriate, but banks do also make calculations about reputational damage from people or organisations their risk teams see as too risky or too much work. It's not always fairly administered but it's not biased against the right.

University club announces 'internal review' after crayfish throwing at Christchurch restaurant

A university rowing club has announced an "internal review" after a crayfish was allegedly killed by a customer at a Christchurch restaurant last Friday.

Police are investigating the incident that saw a man shown on video grabbing a crayfish out of a tank at the Riccarton restaurant before throwing it across the room.

I'm not sure the fact that a crayfish died at a restaurant that serves crayfish is the real story here.

On June 6, Anthony Aguilar, a retired 25-year US Army veteran and Green Beret, found himself facing a daunting logistical problem. He had been recruited as a security contractor for UG Solutions, a partner of the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation—the Israel-backed American nonprofit now overseeing food distribution in the devastated Palestinian territory. His challenge: finding a way to feed the local Palestinian workers assisting with GHF’s efforts. “Nobody could figure out how to get food there,” he says.

So Aguilar says they settled on a workaround: ordering stacks of Domino’s pizzas via an Israeli delivery app and picking them up at the Gaza border themselves. “We then took those 27 pizzas in an armored convoy,” he says, to a GHF distribution site within the strip.

While all of Gaza starves and the entry of aid is prohibited, American mercenaries with the assistance of an IDF armored convoy are able to bring Domino’s pizza in when they feel like it.

Why drilling for fossil fuels is not expected to fix our energy crisis The government is touting oil and gas exploration as the answer. But there are grave doubts it will work.

NZ’s gas supply is collapsing — and the govt’s big fix? More drilling. But experts (including Shane Jones’ advisors) say it likely won’t work, and there’s no backup plan if it fails.
