Resources for Students - American Ornithological Society (AOS)
The American Ornithological Society (AOS) provides many opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students in ornithology.
Excited to present tomorrow in the American Ornithological Societyβs Student Research Seminar Series!
Iβll be talking about my dissertation research into how cardinals are evolving in response to urbanization.

They're associated with declines in native species richness: doi.org/10.1007/s112...

The mechanisms of why that is aren't super well documented. But one factor could be that house sparrows compete with native species for nesting habitat: doi.org/10.1007/s109...

My proposal: βPrevious studies conducted between 2004 and 2013 quantified the costs of P. downsi parasitism on nestling hemoglobin levels in G. fortis and G. fuliginosa (Dudaniec et al. 2006, Knutie et al. 2016)."

Reviewer 2: βFor Aim 2b, do hemoglobin measurements for those two species exist from 2004? Presumably yes, as that is what is implied will be analyzed from Figure 4, but no details about whether these measurements have been collected is included.β

Especially frustrating is that the most critical review had a lot of incorrect/incomplete readings of my proposal.

Is this tested with medium coverage genomes (~10x)? Skimmed the paper and didnβt catch anything about validation across depths of coverage

Avian circoviruses and hepadnaviruses identified in tissue samples of various waterfowl
North America is home to over 40 species of migratory waterfowl. Utilizing tissue and cloacal-swab sampling from hunter-harvested carcasses in 2021β20β¦
Another new article, led by Diego Olivo! "Avian circoviruses and hepadnaviruses identified in tissue samples of various waterfowl" I had a lot of fun dissecting waterfowl with this group of scientists, and with very cool results!

To effectively teach to our diverse student classes, we have to acknowledge the culture they bring with them into our classrooms and teach responsively β yes, even in higher level science classes!!!

We also found that students enter our college classrooms with different foundations of knowledge based on their identities. LGBTQ, gender, and religious identities all impact how students understand animal life, especially as it relates to sex, gender, and sexuality.
