A bird’s-eye view of the gannet colony at St Kilda The first drone census at St Kilda has revealed the islands are now home to the world’s largest gannet colony.

Results from the 2023 #StKilda Gannet census are to be published in the December issue of #ScottishBirds, revealing relative stability in what is once again the world's largest colony, despite fears that #HPAI may have had a greater impact on the population

Have been looking back at some of the pics I took at Bempton & Flamborough Head earlier this seabird season. Always a special experience watching #NorthernGannets diving into the sea at up to 60mph with their air sacs that cushion the impact.

The prey capture within bouts remains constant under high and low krill availability though.

Of course, with everything in biology, that means there are exceptions that don't fit the mould! But generally seabirds are things like penguins, auks, terns, gulls, boobies, gannets, albatrosses, petrels, cormorants & skuas. Grebes, ducks, herons & waders (eg) are more 'aquatic' or 'water' birds 🦆

Hi there, no worries at all - birdwatching can be a steep learning curve! The term "Seabird" can be contentious, and some people do include shorebirds in this as well. But for us, our definition is birds that spend all or much of their lives out at sea, and are adapted to the marine environment 🌊
