The beach scene is so ... Poor Richard doesn't have any idea what he's dealing with (a theme lol) and as for L well he probably wishes he was back in R flying his ex eagle and this moment had not occurred - none of which is possible.

DD is so clever in creating characters that are both incredible in their own right and perfect servants to the plot. And makes each loss so hard particularly for L.

She'd have done much better without him!

I wanted to write a novel featuring Philip Sidney but was too intimidated by his intellect and Dorothy Dunnett's writing to ever get going 😂 best to know my place!

Love it. The home of the Sidneys. Sir Philip Sidney being my favourite Elizabethan! He wasn't a fave of Elizabeth despite his brilliance. She was obvs super close to Leicester 😁 but the Sidneys don't seem to have been so favoured. Philip often ended up doing his uncle's dirty work.

I'm also coming up to fifty years from my first read through Lymond. A summer of long nights and sore eyes! 100% agree that every reread reminds just how brilliant DD's writing is.

I think Going Postal is a good starter too.

I'm pretty sure that @msagara.bsky.social is another Dunnett influenced fantasy author. Her 'Sun Sword' series is about as close as I've come to the experience of reading Lymomd and I feel sure Dorothy Dunnett was often discussed on her Yahoo group.
