Surrogacy can be an “exercise in demonstrating the values of 'love' and 'solidarity'...Such pressures discourage women from seeking help or voicing dissent, as they may already feel bound by the commitment.” 7/15

It notes the experience of surrogate mothers with multiple embryo transfers, selective abortion, lack of freedom of movement, losing body autonomy and the right to confidentiality : “Demands are often justified by claims that the child belongs to the commissioning parents.” 6/15

Surrogate mothers spoke on how “Family members or friends emotionally blackmail women to help them have a child by becoming a surrogate” & the report covers the unequal power dynamics, being treated like cattle, feelings of powerlessness & a lack of independent legal advice. 5/15

Broadly, this can cover everything from being in the public eye, having a busy or image focused career to phobias like Tokophobia (fear of childbirth) and Emetophobia (fear of vomiting) 4/15

The report clearly defines infertility v. what has been referred to as social infertility (same sex couples or single men and couples who are past normal child bearing years) and mentions ‘social’ surrogacy, where a woman doesn't want to be pregnant herself. 3/15

The report is fully comprehensive, noting dehumanising language and stereotypes, blurred lines on 'compensation'/’expenses’, international markets, media coverage, medical risks, human rights, consent, exploitation and the infantilisation of women. 2/15

Published yesterday, with 120 submissions and discussions with 78 experts, the report from @UNSRVAW on #surrogacy will be presented to the General Assembly in October.

Some may want regulate #surrogacy in an attempt to make it ‘safer’ or ‘ethical’.

Key observations are:

* surrogacy pregnancies carry an increased risk, with severe postpartum haemorrhage, pre-eclampsia, and postpartum sepsis named as the medical risks

* surrogacy is nearly double the risk of Severe Maternal Morbidity (SMM) than that of IVF

Children can be deeply affected by #surrogacy as they come to terms with reality of the baby they knew their mother was having for someone else, going away to live elsewhere.

The terms used in the ‘community’ for the children who stay with their mothers is ‘Keepers’.

Elderly couple in their 70s become legal parents of surrogate baby The couple, both aged 72, applied to the courts for a parental order in July after the baby was born six months earlier to a surrogate in California using the husband's sperm and a donor egg.

It’s time for government to close the loophole on international commercial surrogacy which is allowed in the UK.

Until then we can expect to read more about these cases.

Friends of the couple in their 30s and a niece in her early 50s have agreed to be guardians but none of them knew of the couple’s plan, or of the child’s existence until after he was born and it’s hard to imagine how they might have been able to say no, given the situation they were presented with.

In this case the boy who is now 14 months old - who is cared for by a full time nanny - appears to have been commissioned in connection with the death of his adult brother. So he will have that to manage as he grows up as well.

These children suffer the loss of their mother at birth and will likely experience additional grief from the deaths of their legal parents before they finish primary school, as average mortality rates from the Office of National Statistics suggest that men live until 78 and until 82 for women.
