This statement is powerful because it comes from our main character, someone who often listens to what others say without much thought.

Our main character is surprisingly aware of her role within the convenience store. In the text, she refers to herself as a cog in the machine. I found this interesting because she often is unsure of why she has to do things or what the point of certain luxuries is.

I figured there would be a natural riff in there relationship but what I never expects was for Nadia to start leaning towards women. The story while heartbreaking was very full circle and I loved that.

This is my first genuinely in-depth magical realism read, and Mohsin Hamid's use of it in the story is powerful and engaging. The relationship between the two main protagonists is also beautiful in its own way: the way the two work as opposites, yet together in such a brutal reality.

It’s interesting seeing Tambu experiencing what we call “code switching” when visiting home. Not only does the demeanor but so does her way of speaking to her parents compared to her cousin. #bsuwlit

I think the way she highlights how different the customs are is important to under this cultural shift. I also find it interesting that they don’t really explain how anything works.

In act one I wasn’t prepared for the tea, but in all seriousness.I found it wild that Elesin can just say ‘I want that one’ and marry a woman. Especially one who is already married.

Unsure, I’d never heard of it before today. I think it’s an text that can foster important conversation in and out of the classroom. I however think it should only be in specific classes in colleges.
