Alongside my earlier piece, I have written a follow up blog giving my opinions about the proposed changes to school accountability measures in the @departmentforedu.bsky.social consultation.
Read it all here: educatingmrmattock.blogspot.com/2026/02/new-...
A lovely variation of a growing patterns activity from @mikewiernicki.bsky.social. What if we give students an image of Stage 1 (instead of 1-3) & ask, "How might it grow?" B/c they create the pattern, students have "a real 'need' to know how to describe it."

Really interesting article from
@stanfordmedicine.bsky.social today examining the difference between how those with maths learning difficulties compare two quantities with those that don't have the same difficulties.
Well worth a read - provides great insights.

What better way to start your week with a double-dose of talking about maths?!
Absolutely fantastic day at @mathshorizons.bsky.social talking with people about teaching problem solving in maths.
Big thanks to @drhelendrury.bsky.social, @edsouthall.bsky.social (and the other members of the team) for hosting such a wonderful get together and discussion.
Picture of me on my way to the train station
Early start this morning for my trip to London to take part in the @mathshorizons.bsky.social session looking at their new problem solving framework.
Looking forward to catching up with many of my friends and colleagues in maths education and getting into a fascinating area of debate.
That actually seems to suggest it is the whole expression - the radical expression. I guess it is one of those things like trapezoid/trapezium. In this country a trapezium has exactly one pair of parallel lines whereas a trapezoid has at least one pair in the US (as I understand it).
17.01.2026 21:15 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Haha, interestingly I always thought 'radical' was synonymous with surd, and didn't realise you applied it to all roots. Is it the symbol alone that it is the radical? Or the whole expression?

My week of website updating comes to a close with four new Frayer models on www.frayer-model.co.uk.

Two in the algebra section - coefficient and variable.
