I'll give some sci-fi a pass on "basic", but still think they can do better.
It's just more fun not to.

Irl SI is commonly referred to as Metric, bc that's what it's derrived from.
Hell, even Esperanto isn't called basic or common, and that was (as far as I understand) it's entire purpose.

I lovelovelove in fiction when languages, names of peoples and such are derived from geopolitics rather than species.
It 1: makes so much more sense. 2: allows for more interesting worldbuilding. And 3: has significantly less built in racism.
