#Snow measurement in #Davos – day after day, year after year: since autumn 1936, researchers have been measuring snow data at #Weissfluhjoch every day. #SLF PhD students from the so-called Jochdienst explain what it means to them.

Avalanche winter of 1951:
They are the cheapest and most important form of avalanche protection in terms of area – and they grow back naturally: forests. What the SLF researched after the avalanche winter of 1951: www.slf.ch/en/news/aval...

After the #avalanche #winter of 1951, #SLF researchers developed a system for mapping areas at #risk from avalanches. The resulting colour scale for danger zones still forms the basis of the hazard maps produced today.

🤩 Mappa neve relativa @slfdavos.bsky.social
From careful planning to wild experimentation – the SAMD students visited the SLF for a morning focused on avalanche prevention.

After the avalanche winter 1951, the #SLF stepped up its research into #avalanche protection. The findings led to a move away from walls, the usual defence mechanism until then, towards the #snow bridges and snow nets that remain common today.

#Avalanche #winter 1950/51: Far above-average #precipitation led to the disaster. In mid-January alone, it snowed for 88 hours without interruption. This amount of fresh #snow of up to 250 cm only occurs every 50 to 100 years.

How do avalanches affect pylons and other sensitive #infrastructure? Using detailed #simulations, #SLF researcher @mjkohler.bsky.social shows that the compressibility of #snow initially reduces #avalanche pressure, but that at high speeds this buffer suddenly fails.
