A study reveals the effects of Florida's new public university post-tenure review:
* higher rate of faculty departure
* younger star faculty were more likely to leave
* new hires were less likely to be stars
* low-performing faculty didn't increase their performance

The National Institutes of Health, the largest funder of biomedical research in the world, has fired 1,300 employees and cancelled more than $2 billion in federal research grants. https://cbsn.ws/4daiCrv
New report shows that NIH grants fueled $95 billion in economic activity and 407,782 jobs in 2024.
That's not to mention the countless lives that biomedical research has saved.
Show me a better investment than that.

Frightening to see active dismantling of decades of public investments in our health and futures.
Great story by AP’s Mayika Seminara about how Duke scientists are responding to uncertainty. apnews.com/article/trum...
Not only are we limiting our medical research and advancement of new treatments, but NIH cuts are affecting ability of universities to take on grad students, limiting our future workforce @altcdc.altgov.info @altnih4science.bsky.social #science #cuts #resist

Finally a Friday evening with GOOD news 🙌🏽
So grateful for people who are willing to stand up and fight for what’s right instead of prematurely bowing to injustice.
A large portion of grants awarded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health cannot be funded for the foreseeable future because of an indefinite hold on submissions to the Federal Register, according to an email reviewed by The Transmitter.

I had two grant proposals up for review in the NIH Bacterial Virulence (BV) study section. It was canceled without notice this morning.
Without those grants, my lab must close within a year.
And so the purge of scientific research in the US continues

I just covered this for @thetransmitter.bsky.social — will keep following! www.thetransmitter.org/funding/fede...
So a former postdoc from our department had just started as a PO at NIH and was terminated in the wave of terminations last week. He is in the research triangle and a phenomenal scientist with expertise in stress and glia. If anyone in the RTI is hiring asap please let me know! #neuroskyence
ATTENTION (PLEASE SHARE)
If anyone has or knows of any positions that might be appropriate for the NIH staff members who were terminated, please post the information in this thread.
There are lots of talented and accomplished people who may be looking for new opportunities.
Executive wants to frame the NIH indirects cut as $4B in savings.
But given that NIH returns $2.5 on every $1 investment, this would actually cost US economy a net $6 BILLION (per year!). Not to mention the human costs of wrecking education and research sectors and the communities they serve.
🚨RED ALERT for 🧪:
The Trump NIH just gashed indirect costs. This is a direct attack on universities.
“Pursuant to this Supplemental Guidance, there will be a standard rate of 15% across all NIH grants for indirect costs.” 😮
Just a devastating Friday night news dump. #scicomm #academicaky
