Yes, I think you're right, they are forms of cultural-emotional tethers - emotional-support monoliths, if you will :) - and the present (and future) will always be viewed with relation to what we cling to of the past

That doesn't mean abandoning any attachments to the past, but I feel that we're trapped in some sort of thought experiment that has become an enclosed system that we can't break out of. I need to phrase this properly, but it'll probably take another blog post to explain properly

I do think that we need to be thinking more about the future, and not just the future as a carbon copy of now (but with a few extra tech marvels), but a future in a completely different shape
