Diagnosis can take years & the average life expectancy after is only 2-5 years. Right now we can only support those with ALS by supporting them as they try to live their best life for as long as they can. I have seen first hand how absolutely mentally & physically frustrating it is for patients 🧵

90% of ALS cases are sporadic. We believe Tim's may have developed from long-term exposure to mechanical or photography related chemicals. Only 5-10% of cases have a genetic link. The Ice Bucket Challenge (remember that?) helped advance research but as of now there is still no cure 🧵

ALS is heartbreaking & unfair. It strikes quickly & devastatingly, causing the body to fail without affecting cognition.

I lost my Uncle Tim in 2010. ALS stole him from his wife & young son. He was an award winning photographer, talented in everything he touched, & the funniest dude I've ever met 🧵
