I heard once about some young folk who went to hear John Martyn at the Fairfield Halls. Driving home after the gig they saw someone at the bus stop with a guitar case. It was John. They offered him a lift, and he ended up going back to theirs and smoking and playing half the night.

The Red Shoes costume designer was German refugee Hein Heckroth.

The artist fled Nazi Germany with his Jewish wife Ada and daughter in 1935.

When war broke out and fears of a "Fifth Column" were spread in The Mail and Express in 1940, Heckroth was rounded up... and sent to Australia on HMT Dunera.

Donald Trump says crime in London is going through the roof. In reality the latest figures show that murders in London in the first nine months of 2025 were lower than in any year since monthly homicide records began in 2003, and 2025 saw a 7% drop in knife crime.

Absolutely epic thread. He was a former head teacher of the secondary school I went to. Just an old picture on a wall with the other former heads. No post-nominals. No fuss made. I expect now all this is known the school would make a bigger deal of him. It's the kind of school that would.

SHOCK POLL:
NIGEL FARAGE WILL BE PM TOMORROW
IN an amazing poll conducted
by The Pointless Polling Company, it was revealed that voters' intentions
may well change over the next three and a half years and at present it's 100 percent impossible to guess what the next government might look like.
However, 99 percent of journalists
agree that it would be much more fun if we had an election tomorrow and everybody resigned and everything was chaos and Farage had a go at being PM, just for the hell of it, because it was so much fun when
Brexit happened and then the government kept falling every five minutes and we could write endless pieces about (cont. p94)

Private Eye offers up an excellently scornful commentary on the relentless polling. It’s become ridiculous and has oversimplified our politics to dangerous levels of stupid and irresponsible.
