Natural history especially birds and moths.
It's still in a pot....
07.08.2025 17:28 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Just 52:36 to MV last night. Most unexpected was Catoptria margaritella, presumably a migrant, only other migrant was a single RDP. S Hants, VC11. Agriphila geniculea and Ptocheuusa paupella nfy. #teammoth @migrantmothuk.bsky.social
07.08.2025 14:40 β π 23 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0All you need is a hand lens! Further investigation is never a good outcome for the moth in question.
04.07.2025 21:09 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Apparently the 3rd segment of the labial palps is entirely white in caradjai, mixed yellow and dark brown in quad and deauratella and black with a pale tip in novimundi. 2nd edition of micros book says this feature may be helpful as a pointer for further investigation.
04.07.2025 19:30 β π 7 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0The palps may also offer some clues.
04.07.2025 07:24 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0139:54 to 6w actinic last night produced Plain Pug nfg. Also this presumed Oak Nycteoline, not seen this form before. Migrants consisted of 11 Diamondback and a Rusty-dot Pearl. S Hants, VC11. #teammoth
02.07.2025 17:13 β π 13 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Glad the parva came Steve!
21.06.2025 18:00 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0At Stubbington, Hants #teammoth
20.06.2025 15:57 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 041:24 to 6w actinic last night. Common Clothes Moth was nfg. Nfy were Brown-tail, Dwarf Cream Wave, Elephant Hawk-moth, Poplar Grey and Water Veneer. The third Small Marbled in the last week, this the brightest of them and the only apparent migrant. ##teammoth @migrantmothuk.bsky.social
20.06.2025 15:29 β π 29 π 1 π¬ 3 π 0I reckon by Monday you'll have had one π
19.06.2025 13:20 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0115:53 to MV in Stubbington, Hants last night included another Small Marbled and 3 Diamondback. Lots of nfy including Acrobasis marmorea, Dot Moth, Figure of 80, Mottled Beauty, Metzneria metzneriella and one of my ultimate favourites, Leopard Moth. #teammoth @migrantmothuk.bsky.social
19.06.2025 12:13 β π 24 π 1 π¬ 2 π 0A modest 27:20 to the 6w actinic last night included a Small Marbled, the only other migrant was a single Diamondback. A huge Brown House Moth threw me for a while! Stubbington, S Hants, VC11. ##teammoth @migrantmothuk.bsky.social
17.06.2025 16:09 β π 17 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0Certainly good for a pheromone here, leaving it overnight might be key? A few are away and with the forecast rain, I don't think anyone is contemplating tonight.
13.06.2025 18:32 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 065:32 in Stubbington, S Hants last night included Lilac Beauty, Four-spotted Footman and 8 Diamondbacks. FUN lure left overnight attracted 2 Grapholita tenebrosana (nfm), 10 Grapholita funebrana and a Pammene (albuginana type). #teammoth @migrantmothuk.bsky.social
13.06.2025 17:41 β π 16 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0Absolutely!
07.06.2025 14:10 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Also a couple of Pammene regiana.
07.06.2025 12:00 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Phyllonorycter geniculella mines on Sycamore.
Phyllonorycter coryli mine on Hazel.
Stigmella hybnerella mine on Hawthorn.
Stigmella plagicolella mine on Prunus.
Some common leafmines in the local cemetery this morning - Phyllonorycter geniculella on Sycamore, Phyllonorycter coryli on Hazel, Stigmella hybnerella on Hawthorn and Stigmella plagicolella on Prunus. S Hants, VC11 #teammoth
07.06.2025 11:57 β π 14 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0Clearly a hybrid with Bird's Wing!
04.06.2025 16:24 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Haha, you say that now.... !
31.05.2025 20:46 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Similar here! Crashed at 02:15. Up to close the garden trap down at 04:45, and up again at 8. Cheers for the heads up on Treble-bar ID, it proved to be a male Lesser.
31.05.2025 19:55 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I'll bet a pint that you get at least one Raspberry Clearwing this year! I'll be trying here too.
13.05.2025 16:56 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Well done Dave, some nice moths there. Another first for Hants, you'll be expecting one a year at this rate! π
13.05.2025 16:25 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0When it comes to moths, almost anything is possible!...
09.05.2025 10:46 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Having been looking at many pics of this group lately, it seems that albuginana often seems very pale about the head/front of thorax, certainly more often than suspectana. Probably much overlap but perhaps a 'soft' feature?
08.05.2025 16:04 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0They looked like albuginana I felt and that has pale bases to the hindwings.
08.05.2025 15:57 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Absolutely no idea!
08.05.2025 15:49 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 3 π 0Ok, so I tried videoing the beast while it was flapping about in the tube. Here are a few frames which just about show a paler base to the wing. I know some phones/cameras have a slow motion video capability, that may work better.
08.05.2025 15:37 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I'll let you know tomorrow... π
07.05.2025 21:16 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I had 2 albuginana types to FUN around the same time this evening, the first thing to a lure in the garden this year besides Nettle-tap! I'll see what I can deduce from them tomorrow but they won't be getting the chop.
07.05.2025 20:40 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0We all have to start somewhere! It gets easier π
