It's quite different to how Western musicians tend to think of rhythms in their relationship to a beat that is uniformly aligned with the downbeat, but at the same time it is loosely analogous to the use of different modes of the major scale.

In many styles of music that use the bell pattern, there is some fluidity in how they are performed. In the large drumming ensembles common in the Ewe culture, different drums have different patterns which are aligned to a specific stroke of the bell pattern, not always the downbeat.

But there are also seven possible starting points for each. We do have seven modes of the major scale, with a handful of historical and theoretical reasons for favoring major and minor. I don't know if there's a reason that the bell pattern usually starts where it does. But...

These correspond to the major scale and lydian dominant when expressed as scales, but I don't know if the rhythmic counterpart of the second arrangement is widely used.

There is the question of why this particular arrangement for both, with the same starting position. If you don't care about the starting position, and add the provision that the two half steps/eight notes can't be consecutive, there are two possible arrangements.

When I studied African music in grad school 20 years ago, we had a guest lecture from a math/CS professor doing computational analysis of the bell pattern. He noted the similarity to the major scale and implied a causal relationship, which I didn't buy. The shared asymmetry idea is more compelling.

When I was in Mumbai for a math competition in high school one of the highlights of the trip was a classical ballet performance. Very nice.

The chaos answer: we called them "wedges," but the spaces where you could get one of them for answering a question (instead of just continuing to go around the board) were "pie pieces"

But I do want to be able to finish the grid in 3 hours going at a pace that allows me to explain my decision-making, so something like a full-sized Rows Garden is probably too big.
