i guess it depends on where in tokyo you're leaving from but isn't it only like half an hour from like ueno? i can't imagine the shinkansen being that much faster (unless you have a rail pass and it costs nothing, then go wild)

like a trip or two later i decided to try an smbc machine because why the fuck not at this point and instead of getting rejected immediately, it triggered a security alert email that I could respond to and approve, and my card worked everywhere in japan ever since

was reminded that after I got a US bank account, my debit card actually did not work in japanese ATMs, which was the first time I'd ever been in that situation. I used my canadian card for a while and kept trying the american card every so often until one day........

the main issue is going to be figuring out whether getting hit by forex feeds on credit card is better or worse than getting hit by ATM fees from the bank because there are no great canadian options for either (probably tangerine)

I've needed a lot less cash in recent trips and relied on card for most transactions, though that's partly because I also switched to mobile suica which is refilled via credit card. But you just need some cash and can get more at ATMs easily.
