The Rocco Siffredi series was a slow start for me but now I’m hooked

Genevieve Some of the thoughts that came up for me during Kraus lecture: * I was pretty inspired by the fact that she has a similar history to where I am now. I am becoming more deeply involved in experimental theatre and my own performance work, yet have a very serious interest in writing, both creative and critical. It seems to me that she has managed to marry both kinds of writing and has based a large part of her knowledge on a personal history deeply entwined in he arts. This is exciting to see as a possible direction my own art might one day take. * One thing which distressed me in her critique was the emphasis she gave to the New York art world being the epitome of success as if the only measure for any artists worth pivoted individual achievement. This is something I am questioning more and more as I assess what me life goals are for creative expression. I do not believe that recognition by a money mongering upper class elite would be the marker for people who themselves do not wear this badge and who likely shit upon it in their conceptual underpinnings. I am currently being made more aware of the variety of alternative arts organizations in existence whose motives lie in generating thoughtful discourse among individuals and provide environmental (social or physical) altering schemes to work within to serve a greater social function. That Kraus seems to view success as acceptance in an altogether rich, male dominated sphere misses the point I think when so many alternative forms of expressive success have been established and many more should be established. With this optimistic viewpoint female artists might innovate rather than conform to an altogether capitalistic system of repression for artists which to me is the established art world gallery system.

This response paper following a Chris Kraus lecture at undergrad in 2007 always tickles me a bit. tf did I know about the capitalist system of repression at that big age?
