Severe allergic conjunctivitis - show on a caucasian with brown iris. This is an inflammatory condition of the conjunctiva (the clear membrane lining the inside of the eyelid and covering the white of the eye) caused by an allergic reaction to substances like pollen, pet dander, or dust mites. It's characterized by symptoms like red, itchy, and watery eyes. This left eye depicts red swollen lids, a bright red lower eyelid margin, watering eyes with chemosis and bright red irritated conjunctival vessels.
The power of pollen - this photograph composite shows a background of abstracted pink petals and in the center are light white pear blossom clusters giving a pastel floating feel to the flowers.
Seasonal allergic conjunctivitis is a major burden β Illustrating the subtleties of conjunctival severity on a standardized model improves physician training, clinical grading, repeatable assessments for treatment outcomes.

In 2014, I taught marine biology. That year, starfish wasting disease ravaged the species and left them unavailable to experience.

Laura at age seven sitting on the couch in pajamas with her eyes bandaged. She is clutching a hotwater bottle and attempting to pose for a photo following a trip to the emergency department to have bark debris removed from her eyes following an apple tree climbing mishap.
I first lost my sight (temporarily) at age 7 in a tree-climbing mishap (while dressed as 3 superheroes). That early darkness shaped my path. Now, I design with vision equity in mindβtranslating science into accessible visuals for all. Vision is personal. Access is essential.

A diagram overview of glycolysis and the process of extracting energy from glucose. A large hexagon of pink glucose is interacted upon by phosphofructokinase and glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate to release protons, electrons used in capturing energy in the molecules of ATP and NADH.
A storyboard diagram for the animation of energy extraction from a glucose molecule. I always pictured it being a bit like a loaf of bread thrown into a sea of waiting fish! Fast and furious with one molecule after another coming by for a quick snack!

Showing a detail of the electron transport chain where the coenzyme FAD swoops in to pick up electrons and protons during the conversion of glucose to energy. In the process the use of metaphor is applied to animate FAD like a hang glider swooping in.
Energized or exhausted?
Metabolism matters but is terribly boring for students!
In this storyboard the coenzyme FAD molecules were designed to mimic hang gliders. This animated behavior reinforces the idea that FAD=ENERGY and metabolic ENERGY=FUN!

A photo-blend capturing a moment of prismatic color as the sun hit the fog on a cold mountain top. Trees in silhouette are shown in various colors of the rainbow with an emerging glowing sun in the center.

Ophthalmology photo of a UV damaged eye. The image shows a small yellow deposit called a pinguecula on the eye. Flecks of green in the white areas, conjunctiva, of the eye are indicative of lissamine green staining that indicates wear-spots, devitalized cells, in the outer tissue layers of the eye.
