Understanding how policymakers define & select evidence in environmental decisions is crucially important. Have you ever wondered how the freshwater pearl mussel (M. margaritifera) lives in our rivers and feeds? I took some photos at our mussel breeding station today. The mussel is buried in the sediment by about a third or more and holds on with its muscular foot. It has two filter openings... 1/2

Freshwater mussels mostly use fish as a host to move upstream. The salamander mussel is unique in latching on to aquatic salamanders! Its larvae encyst in the gills of mudpuppies, possibly staying with their hosts over the winter! (204)

Darwin remarked on the attachment of freshwater bivalves to the feet/feathers of waterfowl as a potential dispersal mechanism. In particular, reports of sphaeriid clams attached to the toes of salamanders are now quite common.

Fighting to keep grass carp out of the Great Lakes | The Narwhal Canada and the U.S. are working to stop a massive invasive fish β€” grass carp β€” from invading the Great Lakes

In 2012, fertile grass carp were identified near the mouth of the Sandusky River on Lake Erie; in 2015, grass carp eggs were found in the river, indicating that some breeding populations had established themselves in parts of the Great Lakes.
