Understanding how policymakers define & select evidence in environmental decisions is crucially important. Based on interviews with 84 Canadian professionals working at science-policy interfaces, Nyboer et al. set out a new definition of βgood evidenceβ @sjcfishy.bsky.socialβ¬ doi.org/10.1016/j.en...
29.08.2025 12:33 β π 10 π 8 π¬ 0 π 0Two black mussels between little gravel, slightly open so that water can be filtered
Half of a black mussel (around 12 cm long in total) can be seen above the sediment
Three mussels in finer sediment, buried deeper but the two openings / siphons can be seen clearly
Have you ever wondered how the freshwater pearl mussel (M. margaritifera) lives in our rivers and feeds? I took some photos at our mussel breeding station today. The mussel is buried in the sediment by about a third or more and holds on with its muscular foot. It has two filter openings... 1/2
22.08.2025 18:32 β π 46 π 6 π¬ 2 π 0Fig from Porto-Hannes et al. 2025 showing a mudpuppy with its bright red exposed gills. There are little spots on the gills, each of which is a little sluglike mussel glochidium only a couple mm in size
Freshwater mussels mostly use fish as a host to move upstream. The salamander mussel is unique in latching on to aquatic salamanders! Its larvae encyst in the gills of mudpuppies, possibly staying with their hosts over the winter! (204)
