Why do women benefit more? Female singers tend to partner with older, more experienced male singers who can offer career resources & mentorship.
But having multiple romantic partners also correlates with success in the industry. Could narcissism drives creative ambition?
Homogamy=career boost.
Our study explores the complex ties between love, fame, and creativity in music. Singers with singer romantic partners achieve earlier & more sustained success—especially women. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Bizarre that our 2020 #Drosophila #AMP review already feels out of date.
Thanks to #AnnualReviews to cover the many updates in the field and present a much more complete picture of the diversity, mechanisms, topics, of fly immunity re: host defence peptides.

Model organisms, in particular non-mammalian model organisms, such as yeast, Caenorhabditis elegans, #Drosophila and zebrafish, have long stood at the centre of biological discovery www.nature.com/articles/s41...
As someone who ended up using non-model systems after doing his PhD with Drosophila, you don't realise just how amazing FlyBase or WormBase are until you try to genetics without them.
I read the preprint. It's very beautiful work from Hadi Boukhatmi's group. They test how if at all #Drosophila can repair their #muscles.

Currently reading Brave Genomes by Silvia Bulgherisi — a wonderful book on recent advances in genomics, environmental change, and the influence of microbes. Highly recommend!

Comment on our @Reproducibility project in @Drosophila immunity. It is a normal that findings—however exciting and important at the time—may later prove to be more complex than initially believed. Re-evaluations is essential to the self-correcting nature of science. www.science.org/content/arti...
the strain on academic publishing could be substantially alleviated if funding agencies stipulated... work they support must be published in non-profit journals.
Specifically on the #metascience side, congrats to @josephlemaitre.bsky.social and @brunolemaitre.bsky.social on this consequential piece. 🎉
By dissecting factors associated with #reproducibility within a single field, there are broad lessons for #ScientificPublishing and broader #science.
The "reproducibility crisis" in science constantly makes headlines. Repro efforts are often limited. What if you could assess reproducibility of an entire field?
That's what @brunolemaitre.bsky.social et al. have done. Fly immunity is highly replicable & offers lessons for #metascience

Congratulations to @fly-eds.bsky.social board member Gábor Juhász @juhg.hu and to Oren Schuldiner @schuldinerorenlab.bsky.social for their election to EMBO membership!

#FlyCROSS is a mentor-mentee matching program for the fly community. They're looking for mentors from all career paths (academia, industry, policy etc.) who have experience with #Drosophila research and are eager to support the next generation of fly scientists.
Apply to become a mentor by 14 July:
Michael Ashburner FRS was an influential figure in the fields of Drosophila genomics and early sequencing database initiatives such as @ebi.embl.org.
Read about their contributions across genetics and bioinformatics in the new biographical memoir: buff.ly/f01zNat

Hidden virus harboured by fruit flies may influence experimental accuracy.

Oh man, you guys. This is so important. Drosophila have led to so much in terms of what we understand about how genes work.
Big #Drosophila news!🪰
The AMP mutant lines from Hanson et al. (elifesciences.org/articles/443...) & the many isogenic immunity strains generated by @lmvteixeira.bsky.social & @brunolemaitre.bsky.social's group are now in @vdrc-flies.bsky.social!
Find the 40 DrosDel Immunity Panel strains at ⬇️
We are happy to annouce that we have deposited at @VDRC
(ViennaDrosophila Resource Center) a list of isogenized @Drosophila immunity mutants affecting all major immune modules and effectors. We hope these strains will be useful to the community.

Sad news. Benny Shilo, a pioneer in dev bio & Drosophila genetics, has died.
I'll remember the infectious enthusiasm and burning curiosity he brought to every conversation I had with him.

Excited to finally announce this work which has been in the pipeline for 5 years: Layers of Immunity.
Faustine et al. made a set of immune mutants covering 4 major immune modules in #Drosophila, deleting melanization (ROS), phagocytosis, and both Toll & Imd NF-kB responses. What did we find?

4/ Of course, homogamy in science has trade-offs too. Our study examines the costs & benefits of these relationships. Want to see the data? Check out our preprint here: ⬇️

3/ This dynamic challenges traditional gender gaps in academia. More research time + a supportive partner in the same field = a formula for success?
2/ Motherhood penalty? Less severe in homogamous couples. Our study suggests that when both partners are researchers, men tend to share more of the investigative workload, mitigating career slowdowns for women.
1/ Women in homogamous relationships tend to advance further in science. As they climb the academic ladder, the proportion of homogamous women increases. Could collaboration at home & work be a key advantage? 🤔
Does marrying a fellow scientist boost your career?
In academia, homogamous couples—where both partners are scientists—are common, especially among top achievers. But who benefits more? Let’s dive into our latest research!
