The Ambiguity of Sorting – How Do Technologies of Separation Bring Us Together? – Käte Hamburger Kolleg: cultures of research (c:o/re)

Here's a nice wrap-up of the show I participated in at the end of last year! Thanks to Ana María Guzman, Jana Hambitzer, and fellow artists Ren Loren Britton and Sasha Bergstrom-Katz!

Happy to share that I’ve been awarded a Research and Work Scholarship for Visual Arts by the City of Cologne.
In times of increasing uncertainty around arts funding and beyond, this kind of support creates crucial space for reflection, research, and experimentation. New project starting in March!

Last week I contributed to a panel on the topic of "ghost labour" at the Nordic Labour Film Festival – invited by @annekaun.bsky.social. I presented my installation EZ Quality Sorter V2, which was previously shown in Sweden in the context of Anne's research project on the automation of welfare.

Erbsenzähler is a german derogative for bureaucratic minded people heavily fixated on quantifyable detail. The digital turned us all into them, the erbsenzählerei infiltrating every aspect of our life, down to the tokens of our language.

Great piece!

The piece is part of the ERBSENZÄHLER project, which explores the quantification and datafication of life. In the EZ Weight Sorter, the material world is mapped onto digital data, which then reshapes physical order. But where to draw the lines—and what happens at the threshold and in the gaps? (5/5)

Detail: The seed travels towards the right on the linear slider and is guided by actuators into its designated glass tube—each tube represents one weight class. (3/5)

Detail: a single pea seed has been dispensed and placed on the fine scale, where its weight is registered. Seeds that fall outside of the predefined weight range are rejected, the rest are transported along the metal axis for final sorting (2/5)

Meet the EZ Weight Sorter MINI – a new machine in the ERBSENZÄHLER series that sorts individual pea seeds into predefined weight classes. As seeds accumulate in the glass tubes, their distribution traces a bell curve, turning the sorter into a live statistical display. (1/5) #projectpeacounter

The conference "Investigating the #KillCloud", held last November in Berlin, looked at IT companies and their contributions to military programs to shed light on the ethical problems associated with the use of #AI.

I'm excited to share that my project "ERBSENZÄHLER Quality Sorter V2" is featured in ANTENNAE! 🌱🤖
The work explores the hidden biases in automated systems and invites visitors to directly engage in the sorting process—highlighting the complexities and subjectivity behind data classification.
