Conceptually yes! But we would need to think about what phases are in the interior of Io, solid or gas etc

The effects of sulfur on near-liquidus phase relations of highly reduced basaltic melts with implications for magmatism in Mercury Data returned from NASA’s MESSENGER mission reveal that Mercury’s surface is highly enriched in sulfur (S) and depleted in iron (Fe), consistent with …

#Mercury is unusually S-rich. Could #sulfur play a role similar to #volatiles on Earth in shaping melt generation and differentiation?
Here, Raj and I combine spectros and expts to show how S dissolves in Mercurian melts affects Mercury’s interior evolution.

What happened if a planet has weight-percent-level S in the mantle melts and how such large amounts of S affect melt generation in reduced planet like Mercury? Stop by my poster tomorrow morning at V21B-0069 and let’s chat! #AGU2025

Next Monday @riceuniversity.bsky.social we have a panel discussion on the geopolitics of critical minerals for the energy transition. Geology does not distribute natural resources fairly. This leads to a complex web of trade and geopolitical tensions.

I see! I often see people use it in olivine as ratios with other elements as well. We do good calibration for Mn, no worries! :)

Rarely use the Mn in the silicate glass then why do we still keep measuring it in the EPMA campaign 🤔

Want to know the lunar sulfur evolution from Apollo to Chang’e-5 mantle? Check out our new GCA paper! A new sulfur content at sulfide saturation (SCSS) model is also attached that is suitable for sulfides with variable metal-sulfur ratio.

Many knowns and unknowns, but we believe once we know more about the farside samples, our hypothesis can be tested and refined!
We also thank the reviews from @sarahlambart.bsky.social and @drjbbalta.bsky.social that significantly improved the paper 5/5

We find that depending on mantle comps, melting conditions vary. But under the same assumps, farside mantle melted in a shallower and cooler place, this may suggest melting happened in a thinner lithosphere and contri to crustal dichotomy by a greater extent of decompression melting 4/5

Therefore we build a framework in anticipation of CE6 mission, we reconstruct the mantle melting conditions to generate these farside lavas by using remote sensing data. In particular, we wonder if melting in both sides are different and may contribute to the crustal dichotomy 3/5

South Pole-Aitken basin (SPA) is the window to study farside magmatism, perhaps in particular may answer the puzzle of lunar dichotomy of crustal thickness and composition. The recent Chang’E 6 mission just returned the farside samples from Apollo basin within the SPA 2/5
