Unfortunately the Guardian has a long history of refusing to engage with woodland managers.
Another journalist writes another article about woodland management without including a single quote from anyone actually involved with woodland management 🤦🏽♀️
Majority of timber plantations are usually open access (unless active harvesting) and not restricted as claimed in this article.
Excellent forest ecology insight from @alexanderlees.bsky.social 🌲🦅
Urban landscapes can influence wildlife behaviour even in ancient forest systems.

There a moments as a journalist working in Westminster that stick with you, this will be one of them.
This is so extremely brave, and a reminder that the epidemic of violence against women and girls affects every part of our society.
Nothing but respect for Charlotte for sharing this.
Really pleased to see better press releases and media coverage of new tree planting projects which are mixed species and which will become multi-purpose woodlands including timber production. 🌳🌲
Ideally it would also mention need for deer & squirrel control.

Good to see that this article by @patrickbarkham.bsky.social includes a quote from a forest manager (although anonymised)
Lynx reintroductions will have a range of impacts, important that those impacts are understood and planned for.

Thanks for following up on this - the Council also needs to explain why it is letting contracts to a company that is repeatedly posting misinformation and which shows little consideration for anyone living or working close to their sites.

“Overall, we found that 75% of the currently established trees are projected to be outside of their climatic niche by the end of the century under moderate climate change (RCP4.5).”
Our focus needs to be on the best species and silviculture for future climates. 🌲🌳
A great and informative watch for 20mins. ⬇️

Quick walk through @thebotanics.bsky.social this afternoon.
Interesting to see these two ancient 🌲Araucariaceae cousins growing next to each and compare their shape and form.
On the left Monkey Puzzle tree (Araucaria araucana) and on the right the Wollemi Pine (Wollemia nobilis)
Completely agree that tree planting campaigns need to be carefully planned.
Majority of monoculture plantations are planted to produce timber/fibre.
The article seems to ignore that we need timber, & also criticises growing them on marginal land.
We need timber plantations AND natural forests

🎧Listen to our latest #podcast episode where we talk about a 🌲forest-based bioeconomy🌳!
🌱Our guests Ivana Živojinović and Ricardo Vargas Carpintero from the IUFRO Bioeconomy Task Force explain what it takes to transition to a sustainable #bioeconomy.
We have to insulate >9 billion square meters until 2050 in the EU.
I don't think it needs many brain cells to realize that this needs to be done with regenerative materials like straw; which is available and cheap instead of fossil, synthetic materials.
So many opportunities for home grown lower carbon bio-materials in a more sustainable future.
And yet these opportunities are often ignored in discussions about land use and net zero.
Do arborglyphs hurt aspen? In our newest paper we examined the ecological effects of arborglyphs. Aspen with arborglyphs had 19% faster radial growth, and no 10-yr mortality bump. This is likely because people carve the healthiest and largest trees!

Across much of Europe, there is significant interest in the opportunities of a forest based bioeconomy.
To decarbonise our economy we will need to replace high carbon materials with lower carbon biobased ones.
