a lot of "progress" is, in fact, just about making the exploitation feel invisible and distant for enough people to feel comfortable with it. that is a very, VERY hard truth to accept once you get comfortable, even as those in charge plan on doing the same to you next.
when people get super angry in defense of Inevitable Progress they usually mean "but I benefit, I don't want to think about the people left behind or doing the 'autonomous' jobs in a sweatshop somewhere far away" or "but I really, really want to believe I'd benefit because I'm drowning and scared"
the problem isn't technology, which can be very cool and used for very good means. but a system designed around exploitation and control is incapable of using technology, no matter how impressive, for anything other than exploitation and control. this isn't esoteric, they're quite open about it.
"automation will lead to everyone having more leisure time!" no it won't, it will lead to people in power going "we have too many people with leisure time we need to massively reduce the population before they enjoy it or ask us for the resources to enjoy it"
