Screenshot from my Substack reads "I'm trying to think of useful things to add or tweak this (extremely useful) list with, for people with disabilities or chronic conditions who do find safe and accessible ways to protest. For example: -If you EVER need rescue inhalers, bring at least 2 with you so there will be one with you and a backup with your buddy. - (Along with printing a paper map) Make a one-page doc of relevant medical concerns and print at least 2 copies (1 for arresting officer and 1 for jail processing); like if you have a history/high risk of DVT that could make leaving you lying on the floor of a bus for a few hours fatal, of if you're on blood thinners or a hemophiliac who could bleed out from an apparently minor wound, even include if your claustrophobic.

- If you have a medical-alert bracelet or similar device, make sure you're wearing it securely - if you don't have one but you've been considering it, this would be a good time to revisit that idea. I'd even add some suggestions to… -Use you're legitimate health concerns to make police or NG worried about being too aggressive with you and anyone you're arrested with, because they risk being singled out in the after-protest press for abusing a disabled person or getting a protestor killed via indifference to their physical comfort.

Would love to hear other ideas which could be added. Maybe we could create a companion list and ask organizers of protests to share it along side other Preparedness lists. Considering my complete inability to stand or walk (even with my rollator) for the time it takes to travel a single block, I see no rational way I can participate in certain protests - short of begging someone to loan me a mobility scooter. But if I did there are definitely extra precautions I'd take to insure I survived it without damaging myself further. Maybe gathering those ideas can allow those of us in similar situations to help the more ambulatory others stay safe. :)

THIS is literally a lesson schools should be teaching as part of history. Arguably a course on the History of Protest should be part of a HS education, so we understand not just how it has altered society, but the good and bad ways it can change minds, regardless of the intent behind it.

I would also just like to point out that it is currently 52° in Portland, & we've gotten about half an inch of rain today.

A lot of people were literally nuts out for freedom in some rather cold rain today. I'm willing to bet that most of the people turning their noses up aren't willing to do that.

It's always been a problem. Since we first started using psychological terminology related to abuse and trauma - accusations that we're overusing that terminology has been used to gaslight people, whom themselves are just trying to understand their own experiences with the relevant language.

"Nothing in Common" was quintessentially 80s/Gen Z. It embraced the fun and energy of urban yuppie culture, but also swatted at its modern snooty disdain for the previous generations - generations we must admit bottled up their feelings and "quietly endured" in harmful, even destructive, ways. This scene between Hanks, Corbin and Sela Ward (playing Woolrich's all-business daughter & David's new lover) is poignant b/c playboy-yuppie David finally chooses to prioritize family, but must also defend that choice against this father/daughter, who represent everything he used to care about.[8/9]

3rd - As you can see, Corbin's character doesn't just repeatedly demand David come along. He throws a fucking temper tantrum, hits him, and counts like a scolding parent, until being silenced by a trademark Hanks "I said that's enough of your BS!" outburst. It's epic. [6/9]

His dad doesn't move in but each parent increasingly leans on David for support, and while struggling to cope, he eventually learns his dad is diabetic and refused to manage it. His necrotic feet now require surgery (they amputate toes & part of one foot) - THAT is why David refuses NY trip. [5/9]

His boss Charlie (the brilliant Héctor Elizondo) is entirely sympathetic to what Hanks' character (David) is going through and gives him NO grief over this outburst. 2nd, when David's mom suddenly leaves his dad, the unspoken anger and neglect in their marriage/the family is finally revealed. Then: IMO "Nothing in Common" is one of Tom Hanks' most incredible and strangely forgotten films. It's funny & heartwarming w/an astonishingly good cast. But this context is about why & how Hanks delvers the 'fucking line.'
